The beehive isn't designed that way just to save weight on the retainer
end, it is because the varying coil diameters have different resonant
frequencies, which all but eliminates spring surge. This makes the spring
able to maintain superior control of the valve over a wider RPM range.

I never looked them up. I just knew they were on a Slant 6 head!
