I'm happy to see it progressing. The difference in the MOPAR green and the repainted areas are pretty evident here. Carry-On, Canada.

07 June 2017

Hello All!

Firstly, thanks for all the encouragement. It's been a long process, especially for a guy who really isn't a 'car' guy...with the help of you here at S6F, I have been learning slowly (sometimes painfully so). I sincerely appreciate all the advice and interest.

Secondly: Here is The Beast (as I've been referring to her lately), as she is today. I FINALLY got the upholstery guy in to complete the new vinyl roof and the headliner installation. I went over it all with a fine-toothed-comb and it looks pretty damned good. Now, I am contacting a glass installer to see if I can get the original windshield and rear window back in, without snapping them. 44+ year-old glass = 50% chance, I've heard. We'll see. New clips and rubber seals are already here. Fingers, balls and eyes crossed.

I am having a very hard time finding these replacement clips. They hold the side trim on where the vinyl roof meets the body of the car. A few broke when we removed the trim to complete the bodywork. If anyone has an idea where I might find these, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Shawn

Are THESE the clips you are looking for?

Hey!

Thanks for the heads-up. I saw those a while back, but they're not exactly the same size as mine. I have a query in to the seller to see if they'll fit my Dodge. I appreciate the help.

Shawn

Update - FOUND THEM! A friend steered me to a place back in my hometown! Thanks to Witrak Auto Specialities, located in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada!

Post subject:  Glass Installation

14 June, 2017: Progress at last! After chasing the upholstery guy for weeks to get the new vinyl and headliner installed, I was able to move forward with the glass reinstallation. It was a very hot day, here in Halifax yesterday - but the installation was successful and both pieces of glass went in without too much drama or social unrest. The installed did end up denting a piece of my rear window trim (got a bit over zealous with the rubber mallet, I think). This will have to be addressed later, but at least the project can continue to move forward.

Post subject:  Finally!

Well, the day has finally come. I have the Dart mechanically sound, plated and on the road. Still quite a bit of work to do, but man, is it GOOD to be driving it. Few bugs to iron out, but nothing that can't be overcome, lol. Here are a few pics of the 'drive-day'.

I have appreciated and reeled in all of the great suggestions, ideas and assistance that has come my way, from the great people on this site. I'm sure I'll be back to you all with more questions (sorry, Dan, lol), but I wanted to let you know that it is appreciated greatly.

Thanks everyone!

We've been out a number of times. One thing I'm pleasantly surprised at, is the response from many people about the car. It seems that everyone either had a slant six, had a uncle/brother/dad/mother/sister who had one, or at some point in their lives drove one. It's certainly a 'hit' at the local grocery store and at Canadian Tire, lol.

One thing that surprises me though, is the horrendous gas mileage. I haven't been able to work it out exactly (as I've been adding the odd jerry can of fuel here and there until we had the sending unit fixed), but I"m guessing I average less than 16mpg! I suspect that a carb job will help. I plan on having the original engine rebuilt to stock specs this winter (at least, that's the current plan). I might shave the head a bit and do some headwork...hopefully this rebuild will see a bit better mileage.

But that's the only fly in the ointment, really. All good. Now...if we could only get some sunshine in Halifax!

Cheers, Shawn

16 MPG is actually pretty good for your Dart. Remember, these cars were thought of as economy cars when full size automobiles still got single digit fuel economy.

Hey Reed!

Point taken, I hadn't really thought of that. I will see what I can do to boost it a bit, but I guess it's going to be, what it's going to be, lol. Doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the vehicle at all. Now...if I could only convert it to run on solar energy (or lobster shells), I'd be all set, lol.
