In Your header , You use the word "spongy" that would indicate air in the system compressing.
? bleeder valves at bottom of calipers ? Trapping air in top of caliper?
I've heard of it .

In text . you indicate long travel, then solid braking .
slack in pushrod + rear adjustment or cups in master cylinder not engaging until end of bore?

As always just a guess to a mystery.

Sorry for the radio silence.

The drums are adjusted, and the calipers are installed correctly.

I'm not going to be able to get back to that for a little while. I just had a Porsche 911 show up here with some ungodly noises coming from the engine. Either I'm buried in that job for a while, or he won't want to pay to have it fixed (old 911 motors average about $8k to rebuild yourself, a new crankshaft for one is about $8k all by itself). At any rate, I'll keep you guys posted as to what I find when I finally get back to it.

I did happen to check the master cylinder. It's a 1.03 bore non power unit.

I didn't notice if the bleed screws were at the very tippy top, but I do ritually smack the calipers with a hammer when bleeding to break the surface tension of bubbles on the rough castings.

More to follow at a later date.

Pull a fast one and bolt in a motor out of a VW bug.

That would not be fast at all. And it would sound way worse than a flat six, even if that flat six sounds like it's timing chain guides have disintegrated into the oil galleries. But I'll keep that in mind if the owner wants to go cheep.

There's a LeMons team in California that swapped a VW TDI engine into one. It was rolled and totaled with the original drivetrain removed when they picked it up.

I'll have to remember your comment about tapping the calipers when bleeding.

Yup, Ferkel the Nein-11.. complete with googly eyes and a flapper valve on the hater pipe. One of my favorites.. that and all of the stuff Speedycop comes up with. Cessna, upside down camaro, etc.
