I Just Did This install Last Night.
Here are the tools I used - Works in car or out.
Sections of Pipe used as pressing mandrels - Also Large washers - (those do not come with summit tool)

Okay, I received my new tool (6" section of all thread) today. It threads into the crank very nicely, thanks halfafish! Just need to get a couple of nuts and a washer to go with it. So, onward! Yes! |

The sprocket should bottom out on (be flush with) the flat crank flange/step facing you. Nice work on the tools, Greg. I have always tapped mine on with a hammer and pipe. I now have experienced my first thrust bearing failure, so perhaps I will use a HB press tool next time. I have done this maybe 50 times with no damage, but I guess it is worth it to insure against thrust bearing damage. Lou |

The threads are plenty strong enough to get the gear on. I've never had one fail. My method is similar to what Charlie said, heat the gear in a pan of boiling water on a portable camp stove, walk a couple feet over to the engine with a really hot gear in gloved hands, and slip it on as far as it will go. Slip on the innards of an old damper that has been honed out slightly, and crank away on the bolt until it's in place. Never had a problem. |

Okay, finally I got the crank gear on. In addition to the all thread, nuts, and washers, I used a short piece of exhaust pipe from where I work. It went on pretty easily. Now, onward... |

I tap mine on with a piece of pipe, but butt the back of the crank against a stop (usually rigged against the bench when in the garage, and against a bar stop when in the car). Haven't toasted a thrust bearing yet, and can easily tell when fully on by the sound. |
