Heavy grease works fine, but definitely protect Yourself from the small amount of discharge that shoots out around the dummy shaft, it'll try to lube inject You!! The thread thru method works fine as well.....

Well I tried the bread method to force out the pilot bushing, used Sara Lee Honey Wheat but pound as I might the bushing didn't budge, even made a fixture to hold the pounder in place so I could use a bigger hammer without hitting my fingers. After considering all the other ideas I ordered a 7/8-9 tap from Home Depot to arrive by next Wednesday which I am pretty sure will work, thanks CNC Dude. That way I won't have to try to remove all the bread from behind the bushing. They have a real nice 5 piece puller set with mandrels that expand when you push them in an twist them but it ships from China and costs quite a bit more than the tap. Thanks for all your ideas.

and therein lies the problem. The bread method requires "Wonder Bread".

LOL!! Yeah, I don't hold much faith in the bread being successful, may work on a relatively loose fit...

I couldn't imagine how bread would work. :? But the hydraulics of grease definitely works. Just as long as the driver is not too loose in the hole.

Seymour, just verify the hole in the pilot bushing to confirm the required tap for your needs.

The drill for a 7/8 X 9 tap is 49/64 or .7656, the bushing is worn to about .800. I hope it will work.

The tap came in yesterday and I got over to the garage today to try it out. I should have put something like a nut or two or a ball bearing in the bottom of the hole because the tap ran out of threads before it pushed the bearing all the way out. I finally got it the rest of the way out by rocking it with a vice grips and then using a lever made out of wood to pull on it, also using a vice grips. This was probably the best way to extract this one because the bearing seems to have worn more to one side than the other, at least according to how the tap went in. It was so thin on one side that a two prong puller might not have worked. I got a new bearing in and it fits so tight that it pops when you pull the input shaft out of the hole!

Excellent! Congrats, Seymour, and thanks for carefully fixing this problem. I can hear the pop from here...

If it's that tight is it going to drag the input with the clutch in?

It spins pretty easily even if it pops on the way out. The way the last one wore, I've got a feeling it will loosen up quickly!

Ooof. Have you considered checking the bellhousing bore runout?
