Interesting. Do you know if it had been lightened?

Count us in for one..Is it true that blue paint makes a slant six go faster than cars painted green?
I heard this from farmer in the Mid-West.

Every \6 that I have seen with a thrown rod has been the #5. I wonder if this is an oiling problem?

Funny you should mention it.... My dad's old '72 slant six Duster threw the #5 rod in '86. The engine had been suffering from low oil pressure at the time (186k miles on it with minimal maintenance). I wonder if that's a coincidence...

Unfortunately the car went to the junkyard. That made me (18 at the time) shall we say, a little upset, particularly when I offered to trade him my perfectly good, stock '76 Nova for it and he turned me down. They ended up using (and wrecking) the Nova anyway when I went to college less than a year later.

The crank failures we are seeing with the super fast race cars are from the crank twisting and breaking in two, at the #6 rod to #4 main "cheek".

We are just plain exceeding the mechanical limit of the factory crank.

"Cryo Processing reduces wear and breakage of crankshafts. Two major racing crankshaft makers cryo treat their products as part of the production process."

This might be an option. Nascar and other forms of racing are seeing some pretty amazing results using this on their parts.

Brent got a call from Crower today with a quote: 1 crank $3200.00, 5 cranks $3000.00 and 10 cranks $2800.00. That's for a knife-edged, semi-light weight crank. They said 12-14 weeks after they recieved a deposit it would be shipped. We are going to try other crank companies that will talk to us. Mark

I have already talked to Brent and Jim Cox about the current deal that I have going with Mickey Thompson. Heres the story. I hooked up with this guy Bill Bullock in my apartments who raced for Chrysler from 68' -72'. He still has connections in the racing parts industry. After numerous phone calls we have a deal worked out will Mickey for the crank issues that have plagued slant six racers for years. The cranks are 4550 billet steel(which is over twice as strong as 4340) lightened around 10-12 pounds(final machining will determine exact weight) with hardened chrome throws for bearing lifespan. Now the issue that I am running into is the fact that everybody seems to want something different in regards to the rod throw dimensions. Some people want 2.1 and others want stock. I will be ordering 8 total and fronting the money for all. I need to know who would want what. My intentions are 4 cranks with stock dimensions, and 4 with unfinished rod throws ready for final machining. I have worked out the final price to be $1950 not including shipping. I will be receiving the cranks the begining of November. I am currently in Scotland, because as some of you know I am in the Navy. I will be returning in mid- October to finalize the deal. Mickey has already appointed me a project manager so that hassle is out of the way. I may not be able to access this site when we pull out again, but I can be reached at jkobos@spruance.navy.mil for any questions. Mickey Thomson said he will guarantee every crank to 2700 horsepower. For the price and material being used this is a deal that can't be passed up.

Hi, Jason. I see you finally got the deal done. I was wondering, how it was coming along. Take care, and let us know when you get back.

With me having to buy 8 cranks at one time it is impossible to break it down to individual requirements. It's necessary for someone to program the crank specifics into a very detailed program, and then enter those numbers into a machine. Then the solid piece of billet is inserted and machined. After that one is done then the next and so-on. It would be too much of a hassle to start changing specs. This deal is already something that I had to basically beg Mickey to do for us. Trust me, he doesn't need our money, and we all know that. So I am taking what I can get. How many people are interested so I can get an idea?

Jason,
Last time I checked we had 6 racers ready to put down a deposit on $2000.00 billit cranks.
Lets work "off board" to get this to firm-up.

Anyone else wanting to get one of these cranks needs to contact us ASAP.
DD

After having a conversation with Jim and a few other people I am still working with Crower on making a deal with them for several crankshafts. I personally feel more comfortable dealing with a company like Crower. The price maybe higher but you know you are getting a good part. If anyone besides who I have all ready talked too is interested let us know so I can have a final number of cranks to tell them. I am sending the deposit needed to get started on Monday the 29th. The deposit is $500 per crank and so far we are ordering 5. If anyone wants to check with Crower on this the phone number is 619-422-1191 ask for Dave. Brent
