Yellow arrow points to top of idle well where air and fuel are mixed together for idle and off idle, air leak here would lean out both. Green arrow is top of main well, air leak here leans out main system. As metal gImageets hot it expands,so a small leak when cold might not be there when hot. Base gasket snug it up too.

Thanks everyone. Lots of information to go through. I will look into all of it as the weather warms up especially the factory choke recall. Local NAPA is still run by real parts guys so they may be able to easily check this. Thanks again to all.

Do yourself a big favour and put on a № 1234 electric choke kit which, unlike the factory setup, is adjustable.

I found a Holly 1 bbl, on a '73 Dodge truck that has a cable. Can I use this on my '61 Dodge /6 with a 3 onda tree. Its not a cable operated on a '61 Dodge. The 1 on the truck is an automatic. I want to make sure this '61 runs before I go through all the time and effort of converting it to a Super 6.

I had the day off of work, so I went junking, needed various piddly little parts for a few different vehicles.... among them, my 85 D150 and its slant.
I got the carb off of the ONLY slant engine in the whole yard, happens to have been a 80 volare. just getting it apart now and into the ultrasonic dip.... throttle shaft is a bit stiff, thought sure I remember it was freed up when I originally spotted this car like a month ago// I already have a kit for it sitting here.... bought a "pile" of small parts and this was a small portion of pile, paid for the pile as 1 lot.... so don't have much in any 1 piece within the pile at least.... wanted a model 1945 carb with a vac advance port in my de-Leanburn project..... and this one happened to be my "lucky" find..... wanted this particular model of carb for linkage and choke compatibility with rest of the truck...…. was hoping to find a slightly older one but it was this one or none at the moment.... lets see how well it cleans up.

If you go with a Holley 1920 you will need a 1973 only choke pull off

Holley 1920 carb from about 1968 could work well
Strongly disagree. It would be missing too many crucial vacuum ports and hookups, and even in the unlikely event it were brand new, it would be a much more primitive carburetor, missing a lot of the refinements that were added starting around 1970. Its sloppy fuel management would be highly incompatible with this 1980 car's catalytic converter (-->meltdown).

If someone were bound and determined to put an earlier carburetor on a 1980 car, there would be much wiser choices than a Holley 1920 from about 1968.

A thoughtfully-selected and -specified 2-barrel carburetor with matching intake would make a giant improvement in how the car would run, without introducing new problems.

You can plop the '73 carb on your '61 to see if the engine starts and runs. You won't be able to drive, because the throttle linkage won't hook up. There are vacuum ports on the '73 carb that will need to be plugged off on the '61 car.

Might be original carb, there was a bulletin about this. 4179021 chrysler no, R 8831 holley number orignal application early 1980 till feb 1, 1980 after that date running production change to 4179075 and R 9338 . This carb was for slant six federal and iternational emissions ,non ac and automatic tranny. There was a technical service bulletin about this. The part that changed was the choke vacuum diaphragm [ the pull off]. Driveability kit came with diaphragm chrsler no 4240064. and metal tag with new part number. If your carb does not have a tag . It was not updated?? There were no other changes to carb. The problem with early carbs was the choke was pulled open too far too early. Napa has the cups for accelrator pump with out buying the whole kit. buy at least two. This was copy from old post.

this junkyard carb that I wound up with yesterday, happens to be a 4179021. luck of the draw.... I did not look at door tag, for car build date, to tell if this car was "early" or "late" build..... according to above description, it probably wasn't the original carb, since above says "non A/C"/// but the car that I pulled this from, definitely did have A/C..... and looked factory, not "dealer add on"....
but, anyways, if I can get this carb to run again, you can certainly get yours back going... if your car currently running, the carb can't be seized, like this one was....so you're ahead of that game already.
I did get the throttle shaft free, I did run the throttle body and main body thru 2 cycles last nite in my ultrasonic cleaner.... that's all that will fit in at a time..... I originally got this thing for small engine carbs (think; Briggs and Stratton, Kohler) now it looks like I need another tool.... a bigger ultrasonic cleaner to accept a car carb.... ha ha..... the accel pump discharge check ball and weight was stuck in its bore.... I picked at it with a pick-tool, to get it free.... and then back into the dunk, after a change to fresh solution.... should be good after 1 more 30-min cycle in the bath. Then I can have room in the bath for the airhorn..... I haven't done many car carbs in a while// but when I did, I went thru more than a few buckets of Gunk Hydro Seal over the years... surprising how this ultrasonic tank does as good of a job as that old stuff did, if not better..... with only heated water, and a splash of Simple Green.... plan to plop onto the slant on my 85 truck, for now... while I otherwise "debug" the truck.

I have a pair of BBD's here to do next, those will take a while to clean, have to do 1 casting at a time, and flip, turn, reset ultrasonic for another cycle, repeat..... at least neither of those appears that "bad" (dirty)
one will be for my 85, the other for my kid's '80, now that I have super 6 manifolds for both....

To get the throttle shaft freed up, after soaking several times yesterday with Kroil, I had to gently clamp the throttle body into my vise by the mounting lug , get my Mini Ductor out, wrap the coil around the throttle body on the throttle cable linkage side, heat up the casting, spray with more Kroil, and grab the linkage on both ends with Channellocks and gently twist.... it did come free..... and I got it out of the casting.... so far I don't think this one will need a rebush, like the one did on my 80 Volare's slant when I 1st got that car...... hope not/ as I don't have the "connections" that I did then anymore, either....

I remember going thru a heck of a bout with a Holley 1945, when my brother had his 76 Feather Duster.... I don't remember now why, but I wound up having to hit the junkyards back then and wound up with a Heinz 57 from the original carb and another from the boneyard, and many times of pulling/dismantling/reassembling, to get it right....which I finally did.... I did have to get 1 carb just for the throttle body for some reason... was one of the 1st car carbs that I ever rebuilt, I was just about "got my drivers license for the 1st time" age, maybe a little younger, even.

Hit the add to watch list button, I did that, Ebay sent e mail with discount from seller $16.00. That pull off will update your carb, there where no other changes to carb.

Saw that one, in fact it was the only one of the correct number the search provided. Still deciding what to do but am leaning hard toward rebuilding current one.

The guy had 2-3 of those choke pull offs left, I also got a "deal" email, $18.00 offer from them. I was reluctant because this carb that I have is meant to be a short term deal, as I have a super 6 stack here waiting to go on once I get the truck otherwise sorted out. But since I don't know if the one on there at the moment has ever been changed, or how long it's been sitting, or how long it might work since I am going thru the carb anyways, "why not"? I went ahead and bought it.
