Quote: If the crankshaft originally has a rear rope seal there is a cross hatch pattern present at the rear seal contact area. The cross hatch pattern is designed to pump oil that gets under the seal back into the crankcase.
True. When I worked for a Chrysler dealer in 1964, we got a service bulletin from the factory that addressed customer complaints of excess oil use in 318 engines. It said that several marine crankshafts had gotten into the automobile engine production line, and the hatch pattern was reversed so instead of pumping oil back into the engine, it was pumping it out.
If the crank spun in the opposite direction it seems that the cross hatch pattern would need to also be reversed. This is speculation as I do not have an example of the rear seal cross hatch in front of me at this moment to confirm that it is or is not directional, so this is just one more item to consider. I believe that the crankshafts produced after the change to the rear lip seal do not have the cross hatch pattern. |

And Chrysler weren't the only ones to eff up that way; Ford did, too.

Thank you all for your input. I have had medical problems that put my project on hold but hope l can now resume. I have buffed the knurling off to use the new neoprene rear seal. I thought l had the oil pump gear resulved but it looks as if l am looking for one of those now. I have decided against an electric water pump so l haven't completely resolved that issue yet. The pump will work equally well in both direction but not sure if it will flow adequately. A serpentine belt to turn pump in correct direction may be necessary but not prefered. Again thank you all very much. If this project works l will post pictures. If not l will be too embarrassed to show you. |
