Kinda sorta what I’m thinkin’ Joe... That, combined with 6 of them calliope thangs stickin’ out one side might(y) make ya think of some other cool car in Mopar folk lore... Stickin’ the intakes up high like that might also allow me to use a cool set of custom headers a friend gived me... That’d look cool in that HA/GR or SDRA car I’m plannin’ on buildin’ too... Shoot, if we git it figgered out, maybe we’ll just start us a Bidness makin’ funky Slant heads.... There’s the name right there! “Funky Slant Heads, Inc.”

Here is what Wally Booth and Dick Maskin did with AMC heads in the '70s. Cut the top of the heads, added a big slice of aluminum and then machined it. You wanted to improve the heads, didn't you?

Bruce Sizemore chopped up Boss 351 heads and welded the pieces together to make a head for his 300 Ford. Chevy guys did the same thing with small block heads. Dick Maskin is still making heads. |

All of this cutting up of heads is cool...but it also makes me thankful that I can buy very nicely made heads (for V8's) that are already good performers. It also makes me shake my head at guys who whine that a set of 2 complete and tricked out aluminum heads costs $1500 and they sure wish they could buy some cheaper... |

CJ Batten was Bruce Sizemore's brother in law. He built the head(s) for Bruce. Bruce's world beating Pinto was a Don Hardy car. |

Maybe iron welding technology will see a breakthrough that enables major mods to OEM heads. The raised intake ports is a step in the right direction. I'm already getting old, its not likely to happen soon. |

Jeff Kendall and I were chatting at the Clay City Race this weekend. I mentioned my plans to pursue this modification on a head for one or more of my projects... He kinda got this little grin on his face and said he’s already been fiddling with the same concept. Beginning stages, but he has already mocked up and cut metal here and there.

Brad Pitt. That's what the Slant 6 hobby needs. We need a high roller like Brad to draw attention to the plight of the Slant 6. If Brad owned a Slant, he could drum up support by doing things like mentioning of the need of a good aluminum head during his Oscar speech. He could get his Hollywood cronies to hold fundraisers. We'd all wear oil-colored bow-ribbons on our dinner jacket lapels. In no time flat we'd have a couple million dollars in a Go Fund Me account so the aluminum head boys would finally do what they were put on this Earth to do. We don't need anything other than money and awareness. We need Brad Pitt. |

Right now I'm on a 7, 8, or maybe 9 race tour, with only one of those "in-town". I'll be racing the Nitro Nationals this weekend here in Tulsa, then it's the car show and Nostalgia Races at Arc City Kansas (Mid America Dragway), then Mokan for the Fall Hot Rod Reunion. And then maybe November at the Mopars-In-The-Park at Tulsa again. I just finished the Slow Pokes Reunion at Ardmore OK, and before that was Foot Brake class at Tulsa, and before that was SPAM DRAGS at Mokan, and before that was Knoxville. So, maybe I can get back on the head project this winter. I have it set-up on the mill, but it started to move, so I need a better angle plate set-up to hold it still. That will be a machining project in it's self. My plan is to do one cylinder, and then cut it off, and send to local company for brazing. The head I have on there now is junk. If this works out, then I'll refine the geometry and do all six intakes. Obviously I'll wait until after the brazing to surface and put in bigger valves. Here is the sketch I made to show a friend what I am trying.
