Here are the results of the transmission lottery!
Trans I've been working on is #PK4431566 and came out of 1987 dodge d150 /6 pickup. I think this is an A904 and that is how I rebuilt it.

Trans pulled today out of 1988 dodge d150 with a V6 that I have for parts is #PK4431425.

Pretty close numbers. Are they both 904s? Can I use one to verify parts order in the other?

If these numbers are production numbers, where these transmissions made less than 150 apart?

Thanks for the help!!!!

Have you considered purchasing and using a factory servioce manual for your transmission? That and the ATSG book were all I needed to teach myself how to rebuild a 904 in a weekend.

Use this chart to figure out what section of your trans is having a problem:

When the front clutch applies the band is supposed to release. This could be a simple matter of having that band too tight.

Both bands adjusted to 72 inlbs and then unscrewed 2 turns per handbook. Anyone know if these two transmissions I mentioned above are 904s? I described the way I adjusted the kick down above, is it right or wrong? Shift points seemed to be perfect until it went to third. Noticed that a998 has different band tension specs. REALLY NEED TO KNOW FOR SURE WHAT TRANS I AM WORKING ON! both are listed above with numbers. Thank you.

Linkage looks just like this. I held throttle down all the way, pushed kick down lever all the way back and tightened down. Followed instructions from doctor dodge in /6 post. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7925

matv91, When air testing, I had to loosen low band even when it was disengaged, to see if everything would turn correctly. re torqued after testing to 72 inlbs and backed off 2 turns. still seemed to tight but that was what the handbook says to do. unless it is not a a904?

Actually the # of turns has to do with the lever ratio of the lever that the servo actuates that does the actual tightening of the band. Mopar perf sold a "5.0:1" lever that was the "thing" for a while and the last few years I have heard many say not to use that kickdown lever. There were a few different choices over the years that was stock ratio, I think that the last one I did had a 3.8 lever in it, they're stamped.
