I don't think the original starter fits. The mini starter and super Mini does. Someone who has done this swap will chime in for sure. Any reason you need to keep the original starter?

I have dual dutra duals on my 79 duster. I have the mini starter on it. I doubt the oe starter gear reduction would work. Maybe the older pre '64 ish? Direct drive staryer might fit? I don't know the dimensions of the direct drive starters. Greg |

Quote: is it possible to keep an O.E. style starter?
the first photo in my post in this topic dated Feb 25 2021, is a 225 with the original style Dutra mounted in the rear position with a mini starter. That combo clears, but barely. There is no way an OE style starter would clear. How the new AussieSpeed Rear Dutra would fit with an OE starter, I have no idea. |

I am pretty sure I remember running the OE starter for a while with this setup on my 225. Not much room, but enough. Best to get mini starter. Lou |

I forget when the original Dutra Duals came out.... were mini starters even around at that time? I would think the common Mopar starter of the day almost would have had to have fit, even if a little tight. |

The first Dutra Dual casting was made in 1988 but it was designed to be used as the front section only. I changed the casting pattern in 1992 to make some turbo flange manifold castings, that is when the mounting "tabs" changed to large square blocks. That change allowed the same casting to be machined differently so the manifold could be installed on the front or the rear three cylinders. Clearance to the Chrysler gear reduction starter was real tight but the revised casting could be made to fit on a 225 or 198. (RG engine) There is no way to fit the Dutra exhaust manifold onto the rear 3 cylinders of a 170. DD ![]() |

Not so fast Stan!! ![]() ![]() Here is a new set of Aussie Speed Dutra's on a 170. It took the RobbMC starter to make it work and it was still close. But I got them on with enough room to install a heat shield. Solenoid needs rotated down towards the pan rail. Attachment: IMG_3204.JPG [ 64.82 KiB | Viewed 2663 times ] |

30 years later... the problem has been solved! When I worked on this, the starter options were the "corporate" gear reduction starter, the "new" mini-starter and the "old" direct drive starter. There was (still is) another solution... Use the truck/van low mount direct drive starter set-up but that means using the adapter plate / V-8 727 or the real large and heavy 11 inch truck clutch set-up, on a 170 It is nice to see that there is now an aftermarket starter solution that allows this combination. ![]() DD |

If you look close the bottom of the mounting flange was narrowed by about 1/8" and I also shifted the entire manifold up a 1/16" or so. Then worked the inside of the manifold port floor the same amount. Lots of massaging here and there, but it will work. |
