Our 20 year series anniversary was 2018, but this is the track’s 26th time doing the Mopar Southern Classic. I should have clarified that… So,… 2023 will be OUR 25th anniversary and the track’s 28th time holding the event… |

Quote: Greg Ondayko is well within reach too, but he's got just as long of a tow to get there as Rick.
Better look at your map! I got 3 more hours to travel than Greg. My butt hurts already but I will likely be there! Make things interesting!

Congrats Rick and the Covalt Clan on the Championship Win! I tried my best to take Rick out but My Driving and itchy / slow trigger finger was not having luck with it over the weekend! Greg |

Congratulations to our 2021 Slant 6 National Champion, Mr. Rick Covalt from Waynesboro, PA!! Great job and well-deserved victory, Mr. Covalt! It all came down to the last race of the season at London, KY with the three top contenders all showing up to duke it out for the National title. Rick Covalt pulled into London with his beautiful blue 65 Valiant and 110 points under his belt. Lou Madsen drove his turbocharged 68 Dart 4 door from Blacksburg, VA hot on Rick’s heels with 105 points. Lou had earned points at 5 events coming into London, so he would have a harder time advancing due to the Over 5 Rule. Both Rick and Greg could put points on the board both days without giving up points. Greg Ondayko brought Ruster (68 Valiant 4 door) from Irwin, PA and 85 points. The test & tune Friday night got rained out, but the rest of the weekend was cool and mostly clear. Rick put everyone on notice Saturday that he was serious and won the event; adding 45 points. Greg was right there with Rick clawing and scratching for victory for a Runner Up finish and 35 points. Lou got put on the trailer in the first round by our 2021 Rookie of the Year, Adam Portman, driving the Off-Kilter Racing 62 Valiant 4 door affectionately named “ToadRacer”. Those events set up the final race with Rick sitting at 155, Greg at 120 and Lou at 110. Sunday offered even nicer weather with mostly sunny skies and cool air. Rick got a competition bye in the first round from the Kentucky Poser who struggled all weekend trying to get his little Challenger running right. Greg took out Rodney Hargis in the first round. Lou got a bye in the first round. So, all three of the top contenders were ready for round 2! Rick faced Greg and Lou faced Adam… Who would prevail? Well,… Lou was able to pay back Adam for Saturday (Adam went .003 red) Greg pushed Rick to a double breakout to advance, leaving Rick to bite his nails the rest of the weekend. Round three gave Greg a bye into the finals while Lou took on local racer, Jeff Jasper, in his 66 Valiant… Jeff prevailed over Lou to set up the final with Greg… Jeff got a huge headstart in his street car while Greg went up on the transbrake to get ready to run him down… .0003 too early, giving Jeff the win and $300. Once I ran the points I realized that even if Greg had won that final race he would have been 5 points behind the Covalt Clan Patriarch (165 to 170). It was a great push to the finish this year! Thanks to all who came out and Ran with the Slants!! We had a total of 29 racers competing for points with 5 Rookies in 2021.
