. and with all the glaring seemingly non-focused beam patterns on modern cars of the last ~5 years, .
More than anything I suspect that it is the proliferation of trash PNP hid bulbs in halogen housings AND high intensity LED systems in suv/trucks that have a high stock ride height.

A quick question and note:

Checking my '64 Parts Manual (only year I've got), I find that the 2095 430 pulley is specified for everything, with the exception of all A/C cars (2095 059, 3") and 426 cars (2095 662, 3-1/2").

Measuring my presumed-original pulley shows about 3-1/4".

So, it looks like the breakdown is:
  • 2-1/2" Single 2444 478
    3" Double 2095 059
    3-1/4" Single 2095 430
    3-1/2" Double 2095 662

A search yields one aftermarket Chinesium pulley for sale in several places, showing interchange with both 2095 430 and 2444 478, with a claimed diameter of 68mm (2-11/16"), which will spin 1.2 times faster than a standard 3-1/4" pulley.

It is here on eBay and here on Amazon, both for $16.

I am considering buying one and checking it out. Seems to me a slant-six with a 904, which probably shifts at 4,500 RPM (sorry, I don't have a tach connected) won't turn enough revs to over-rev the alternator.

Question: Any reason for me to believe I'm wrong, and turning the alternator 1.2 times faster during those dramatic highway passing moments will injure it?

Sneaky second question: Anyone think trying this crappy pulley would be a bad idea?

Daring third question: It looks like the pulley is an interference fit on the shaft and has to be pulled off with a special tool and reinstalled with a press. True? Seems a bit involved. Can one actually do this, or is it so involved as to be absurd if everything is working fine anyway?

Thanks,

– Eric

I Found the Source of my problem, it was the alternator. Upon Further inspection, I already had the 2444 478 pulley installed.

It was measured as a 2 3/4" outer Ø pulley.

The other ones that I have access to were a bit bigger, @ 2.9" outer Ø I could not find a part # on this rusty hulk.

Anyway, I kept the 2444 447 Pulley as it was smaller and then I Also Found that 2 of the diode wires in the back of the alternator became unsoldered and loose. I fixed that so now It is slow idling with the headlights on at ~12.5-12.7 V and the Full charge when spinning over 2500 RPM is ~ 14.2-14.3V

Now to repair that starter solenoid.. and check on some other things.

Thanks guys!
