I had a problem with my engine where I had to use the now hard to find Aussie head gasket.
I only bored my block 0.020". The block wasn't where the problem was. It was the head.
I've heard of putting the head on the bare block and looking up from beneath to check out the centering of the combustion chamber over the bore hole. It was in Doug's book even
(Of which i got my copy, after the fact)
But on mine the problem was that when I ported my head I cleaned off a sharp burr around the edges of the combustion chamber and when I went to set my head gasket onto the head with the head still on the bench the fire ring stuck out a bit past the edge of the chamber which I didn't like. And it still would have had I not cleaned up that burr... I found several brands of /6 head gaskets, some from companies that no longer exist, such as ROL and Detroit gasket.. besides fel pro and victor. One of these was slightly larger on the fire ring than the others but still overhung. And since the fire ring might actually squash out a bit when torqued that would only make the "hangover" worse. So the only way I could find not to have the fire ring hang out into the cylinder bore area was to run the Aussie gasket. My engine is a measured out, 8.4:1 CR engine. And that was even after I took 0.030 off the block and 0.070 off of the head...

Hi just talking to my engine builder today and he seems to think the 500 cfm avs2 may be a little too small for my set up. Just wondering if anyone out there has any opinions. The cam manufacturer also recommends around 600 cfm. I do have a mate running a eldelbrock vrs 650 on his hemi 6 and he loves the carb or is an avs2 still the better carb to go for.
Cheers Steve

Tell us more about the engine and it's purpose. Is it a race engine? Mainly a street car? How big is the camshaft? At 8.4 to 1 it sounds like a street car. At that point the 500 I would think would be a great carb for it.

Sorry I didn't look back at page one as I should have! I think you should be fine with a 500 carb.

Hi Rick the motor is a 68 225 block that I will be taking out to 60 thou and have speed pro cast pistons to suit and hastings moly rings. Will have the deck squared up and internals balanced. Have a viper cam bought through hemi performance here in Australia and the specs are .287 duration on the inlet and exhaust, inlet .243 and exhaust .240 @ 50 with a lobe centerline .113 on the inlet and .111 on exhaust with a valve lift of .481 on the inlet and .478 on the exhaust. Rpm range is 950- 5500. Head mods will be SI Valves oversized valves 1.44 and 1.7 with cleaning up the ports, crow cams lifters and valves springs with speed pro push rods.I do have a set of 1.65 ratio yella terra rollers rockers that I may also install. Depending what has to come of the deck will have the head machined up to achieve about 100 thou to increase the compression to around 9-9.5 and will be using an endurotec GSAP210E head gasket. On the manifold side using an aussiespeed AS0470 manifold and a 500 cfm avs2 carb along with a one inch spacer, exhaust will be pacemaker headers that have 1½" primary,2" secondary and 2¼" collector. Will be running a rollmaster CS5300 double row timing chain and romac RO0224SA balancer.Ignition is an ICE unit with billet dissy, ecu that features 128 pre-programmed advance curves, push button adjustable in 1-degree increments from 0 to 20 degrees with various rates of advance as well as a single fully adjustable RPM limiter,High voltage ICE Pro Series Race Coil and their 9mm Pro 100 Series plug wire kit. Will be using a beefed up 904,extra clutches and transgo shift kit with an approx 2,800 stall converter and the rear end will be an 9 inch as I already have it in another valiant that I'm converting back to stock. It has 3.7 gears, lsd and a few other good bits in it. All this will be going into my 1965 ap6 valiant which weighs in about 2758 lb. It is a street car but not an everyday car as its on historic rego so its being built for a weekend bruiser. Sorry for being long winded but would like any comments or power figure what this combo may bring me or any improvements I may make to it. Cheers Steve
