Got my quote back for my head job which includes a stage II package, porting, machining-re-assembly with oversize stainless valves,performance springs,retainers and seals and 3 angle job, competition valve job and pressure testing all for 950 big ones...Dave

maybe some day I'll be fast enough to port a/6 head in just under 8 hours but I doubt it. my hats off to them

I took my head to BPE, I think im gonna have Steve do it, he has done the /6's before

im dropping $975 for a 5 angle valve job 1.70/1.44 SI valves, cc the head, pocket porting, replace the valve guides, and mill the head .060"

Should bring about 60-75 hp into the motor.

Gonna have to work some OT for this one.

Pyper6970, what kind of headers are those ? I notice you got a hi-starter. I'm going to do my own exhaust. Are they custom, Clifford's or what? I'm very interested. Does the front pipe run to the driver's side of the steering box, with the other on the passenger side ? What size pipe are you using ? I heard Dynomax super turbos are the best for a street slant.

Those are clifford shorty streetrod headers. I have a similar setup, with 2 1/4" pipes coming off the collectors into a Y, then single 2 1/4" ipe to the rear through a dynomax superturbo. The sound is a bit more rumbly then stock but very tame.

I have exactly what pierre stated except i run the 2 1/4" pipes into Flowmaster 3 chamber delta 50s. Very mean sound under a load, and still turns heads at idle. I rolled into a car show friday night, people have seen my car, know what it has, had a couple guys mumble "finally put a small block in it eh?" as I was trying to find a parking spot.

Pyper what collector gaskets did you use, how did you get them to seal?

Also, what sort of flange is that welded to the exhaust pipe? That doesn't look like the one clifford sent me.

I used exactly what clifford sent me, I couldnt have the flange welded on the header side b/c that would have burned the coating right off, ( bad design on cliffords part) As for the flanges, its what they gave me, nice and THICK flanges, the gaskets are some Carbon fiber grade that my exhaust guy puts on all his customers cars, they last about 4 times as long as the composite gaskets, and they seal a hell of alot better than those copper gaskets on the market.

Do you mind asking your exhaust guy where one can get them from? If you can take a closer pic of the collecter section so I can check out the gasket, that would be appreciated

Yea the flanges are thick.. but maybe a bit soft? The guy that did my exhaust used an air ratchet (didn't look like it could produce a tremendous ammount of torque compared to say a full blown air gun) on them and bent them (along with the grade 3 bolts he used). Those I might be able to straighten out by sandwiching between two bars and using a C clamp... I just hope the sealing lip of the collector isn't bent.

Pyper, same job as mine, undecided on how much to mill the head, so my final cost remain to be seen. Good thing its not a top priority, with as much money I have been laying out lately, might have to sign up for a years deployment in Iraq to get my bonus!...Dave

I dunno about deployment to pay for it but it wont take me long to have the money surface, I have my chargers instrument cluster about to be sent out, the charger in the body shop and gonna come out in about 3 weeks, plus all the cosmetic pieces for that restoration, its gonna be interesting but I'll manage.

Is it necessary to have a mini starter for the exhaust to fit ? If so, where did you get it ?

Nope, I replaced mine purely for preventative maintenance. It was a 30 yr old starter, I'm sure its life was timed for it to keel over, I just didnt wanna have to get towed home to find out. I got it off E-Bay for 92 bucks, the prices fluctuate but thats the common price.

you're right Pyper, except don't won't to get too involved with projects that take several months to complete until the deployment issue is settled. In the mean time, think I will put together a fuel rail and modify one of my manifolds should I decide to go EFI. The only positive thing is a 1 year deployment would pay off the mortage, put a ram 5.7 in the garage and provide enough funds to keep the GT in parts for years....Dave
