I had a '76 Dart with a 318 from Seattle, WA and it had a cat. By '76 it was standard (well, on the V8's at least). Saying that, I know a guy who has a 360 '76 Dart w/ dual exhaust that doesn't have them. It's an A38 police package car and it has a "cat delete" sticker on the glove box.

Unless it was a hack job, a '72 Mopar should NOT have a cat.

Yeah, I appreciate all your responses. the previous owner actually went to some trouble to get this car smog compliant! Anyway, I am trying to rid the poor thing of all this crap. Got the smog pump off, not sure what else needs to be done.

Post subject:  no cats before 75

The responses that say no car prior to 75 need them is right. In my 17 years as a pro auto mechanic (recently took the remaining tests, and was successful in gaining ASE Master ststus) I have been in many places that did exhaust work, and still remember looking up things in the catalogs and I NEVER remember seeing a single pre 75 car that showed a cat on it!
Everything in Cali got em in 75, most in the rest of the US, too but not all. Some trucks, mostly the Heavier GVW 3/4 and 1 ton trucks went as new as 1987 without cats from the factory! What they don't like to see (too bad anyway) is guys like me who remove the 3 cats off my 89 Diplomat ex cop car for true duals, headers and of course, NO CATS! But then again I remember a certain 72 Firebird that a former co worker had, with duals and a pair of cats on it, but he stripped a 78 or a 79 and simply swapped the exhaust from the newer one to the older one himself just to keep the car quiet enuf not to be a cop magnet. As far as emissions compliance, your car has to pass the specs in effect AT THE TIME IT WAS BUILT nothing more, nothing less. So if it never had a cat, it never needs one.

Well, let me rephrase my statment, I'm pretty sure I've seen pre-75 cars with cats
Not from the factory, and not required by law. If someone added one, it was either because they swapped the pipe assembly off a later car, or because they just wanted to see what would happen.
