I belive it cuts the flow off so you regain pedal feel. I do recall reading in the service manual that htere is a simple resetting procedure for the valve (like slamming on the brakes 5 times and then doing the rain dance, or something like that :)

I replaced the valve with no effect. We think that perhaps the front shoes got heat damaged and just don't create enough friction, so changing the shoes is the next option. We have tried everything else we can think of.

When you replaced the leaking wheel cylinders, did you replace the shoes on those wheels as well?
