Post subject:  Can't find the article...

I think it was a Hot Rod issue I 'borrowed' from a buddy a while back that did one of those 'myth busters' articles. The myth was 'carb quality' so they bought a bunch of OEM carbs (4 barrels) and ran a machinist's square across the baseplate/throttle plate assembly (or Carter guys would translate it as "flange assembly").

Rochesters did OK except for a couple they got from the early 70's (like 1974), Holley's did OK, Edelbrock had no problems, but when it came to the OEM Carter carbs the TQ and some AVS's were recommended to have the baseplate milled slightly to help them seal better (of course I'd just run a thicker flange gasket and call it 'good').

Just in my experience, the BBD I've seen the throttle body warp enough that you can't seal it at the fuel bowl or at the base plate. I've seen a few smog era Holley's that became immediate 'spare parts' carbs after cleaning them up and putting a square over the mating surfaces too...

Sounds like I need to get back over to my buddy's house and start back in on his crate of back issues to see which one it was...I think I had borrowed it either to read read the article on Ford 9" rears or on A-833 rebuild tips....

if anyone can remember the issue or have the source on hand, I know the article had lots of nice 'pics' with base plates, rules and feeler gauges.
