agreed, lockup in second may be useful for low speed towing to keep temp down, otherwise not much point in it. lockup in third should be great for the 40-60 mph range.

lockup in 3-4. bowtie overdrives is 2-3-4 and monster trans is 4 only. yes, 9.5 lockup.
Sorry to ask this guys, but I'm trying to keep up here....So are you saying that with the factory GM 200-4R, that they offered torque converter lockup in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears?

If so, how was that done? This is a little early for an sort of sophisticated electronic controls.

I would guess factory was lockup in only 4th, but I don't know. My wife's 2001 Saturn SL1 locks up in 2-3-4, but the trans is a mass of computer control, and does not always perform properly.

Yeah, that Saturn trans. is what I thought of when I first read that. I borrowed my mother-in-laws S series for a run to Charlotte many years ago. When I first encountered the extra "gears" and was watching the tach, I was a little concerned until I figured out what was going on. With that nice little EFI OHC engine, it made a nice little package, I thought.

hello. found this on one of the buick forums.

In the factory 200r4 setup the lockup comes on under high vacuum situations in all gears except 1st. When the brakes are engaged it opens the ground loop and the lockup turns off. The same thing happens when the engine vacuum goes down when you floor it, it also shuts off.

Cool. On some newer autos, and even in racing, some folks rig them to LU under full throttle too. Apparently the new TC LU linings can take this abuse. Nice to hear there is a ground interrupt circuit to disable LU (I like manual options) and a vacuum operated circuit.

Thanks much, Lou

Sweet!

So, if you don't mind...educate me again here, please.

The converter (A) is a stock item? Or a custom piece with approx. what stall? And this would have to be a GM piece, so the "snout" can mate to the pump in the 200, right?

These are the original GM mounting locations (B) for the flywheel?

This ring is what has been added (C), to adapt to the slant six flywheel?

Looks like two of the mounting locations lined up, clock-wise, though not in diameter, new to old? (not important really, just curious).

Also, this ring adds depth...that is a needed feature when adapting the two together?

Just trying to put this all together in my head....

hello. trans arrived thursday.

hello dave, i am no expert and will probably have more questions than answers along the way, but will do my best.

A. custom converter, invoiced as "street-strip". lonnie at extreme was given the details of my truck, and how i intend to drive it. should stall around 2200ish.

B. the ring is mounted at this point, but the stock gm converter/flex plate bolt pattern is on the 3 "ears" on the ring.

C. i am assuming the depth of this smaller 9.5 inch converter plus the ring is the same depth as the stock 12 inch converter. and with the bolt on ring the maker can use the same converter for varied applications.

the trans has a simple one wire connection for lock up. 12v energize lock up on, de-energize lock up off. anything from a simple toggle switch to more complex control systems can be used for lock up control. B+M has a kit that uses the speedometer to control by speed, and others use the vacuum/brake switch setup.

Tons of interesting and informative information here. Thanks for the tip on what words to use for the search Lou. The long list of decisions and choices is somewhat intimidating at this point. I will really have to think this one through. Of course the money is no small thing, but it all seems appealing on one level. I imagine the car will be off the road for awhile after I get the parts assembled, which could take awhile for monetary reasons.

I will stay tuned to progress from others.

Sam
