Yeah, it looked like you had one on there already. If it didn't pull apart when you took it off, you can reuse. I've had them come apart and other times stay intact, just stuck to the head.

I actually have all of them - only problem is on one, the stud is too short.
End up using two wide washers, so they float.

I am also missing one of the end brass ones - which I also use two floating washers on...

It is sitting waiting for me to grab my neighbor and set it on the block...

Of course, a few more beers and knowing me, I will just say to hell with it and grab it and do it myself - which ends up coming along with a couple of glorious days of being totally in pain...

Brain = 20's
Body = a few months short of 60

They don't always listen to one another...

As soon as I get around to it, I will post some pictures of this...
I was joking with my sister about the fact that - at least you get to see your big brother is mechanically inclined like I've been saying all these years! AND - who else do you know that has rebuilt the top end of a motor in the back of a van?!?!?! LOL

I actually have a ton more to do too!
The old body makes it harder and harder to get stuff done...
No matter how hard I try, I can't work anywhere near as long or as hard as I used to be able to - before everything starts swearing at me...

Anyway, I'm pretty sure break time is over...
Brain still not drunk enough to shut up!!!

later,
dan

I woke up at 1:30 in the morning and ended up in the garage, cleaning and wiping and getting things ready to go together. I have the head gasket sitting on the block now, so all I am waiting on, is my neighbor to come home and help me set the head and IE manifolds on the block...

Still haven't made the time to upload pics - besides, most all of us know what a motor looks like! LOL

So I start putting push rods back in and the #3 intake rod barely fits in!?
It's like it is right at the edge of being too long?
Is this normal or should I be looking at something else now???

Dan, assuming your lifter is in it's hole and resting on the cam, there should be no problem. Perhaps your #3 intake lobe is at its highest point at the moment. Make sure the push rod is seated into the lifter pocket where it belongs and the lifter is in its hole, resting on the cam, should be fine. When you say too long, how far is it sticking up?

It was just barely - enough though, that I could not use force to get it under - I had to loosen the rocker assembly a little to get it under and seated...

Is there a good place to read up on setting the timing cold - from scratch?
I have to go through that now and forgot where it was?

Your timing should be the same as when you took the head off. Unless you moved the distributor.

Otherwise, put #1 at TDC and point the rotor at the #1 plug tower. Fine tune once it is running.

My adjustments on the valve lash are all off - cleaning etc.

I need to know how to set them close enough to run it without blowing something up or bending something?

Cold Roll.

set the lash on each cyl about 3 times total.

From #1TDC.....set 1.......and all other loose v/v s to proper setting......roll 120 degrees ....set cyl that rotor points to(5).....and other loose valves..........roll 120....set #3....etc etc.

I roll until I am sure and have double checked...and again....all the valves.

Later when its warm...repeat.

With #1 at TDC.....turn on the key and rotate the distributor till you get a spark on #1wire....add 5 degrees advance . That is how I cold time a dist.

Oh, valve lash. You said timing before.

If you don't have a bolt in the crank there is no easy way to set the lash cold because you have to manually roll the motor over to advance to the next cylinder to adjust.

Quick and dirty method: loosen all adjusters two turns. That will get the lash loose enough to allow all valves to seat but will be too loose and noisy for daily driving. Start the motor, let it warm up, turn your idle down, then adjust the lash with the engine running.

I just found that the 3" bypass hose DID NOT GO ON PROPERLY!!!
From the passenger side and feeling it - it looked like it dropped on perfectly.

Turns out, on the drivers side, it pinched the hose and bent and ripped part of it down - and there is no way for me to do anything, except take everything apart again and put a new one on there...

Sooner or later that stray bullet is gonna find me and put me out of my misery...

sonof a(*&%^%%% ^$@

I was less than an hour away from trying to fire it up too!!!

Remove the head bolts and just tip the head up enough to get the bypass hose replaced. Sorry about that.

I went and got new hose - then cut it slightly shorter than the one I ripped off there. Was able to wiggle and grab with needle nose and use a screw driver and finally got it on and centered with new clamps and it looks extremely good to go - - - or I will swear it looks like it anyway...

Now back to the regularly scheduled show...

Setting cold valves - with no bolt in the block for turning even!!!

Life in the fast lane I tell ya!!!
I need to slow down and enjoy life one of these days...
