Thanks Wayne!
Looks like I will let the boys ride up in the Lincoln with my girlfriend! I have the seats out because of all the moving I've been doing lately, and I don't like the kids rolling around back there - as much as they like it!
What time do they let us in?

Attention West Side Slant Sixers,

Since you will have a huge turnout at this event, I request that you open a discussion on having an "All America" Slant 6 race next year or the year after at some central track like Kearney, Nebraska.

Maybe some discussion about dates, who would be willing to come, and location.

Thanks for your help,

Lou

Hi Lou: We could send out "from the hive" 6-8 cars to Kearney . I am hoping that with your combined three teams , that you could maybe do the same? This sounds like a great concept..Let's work on it over the winter. I bet we could"camp out"at Mikes ranch.
Off to the Redding race track, with three cars, all on trailers. We will send photos for all to enjoy (after we break the Clay City record..I hope..) Do we get any more points if we have 33 cars? Hope to meet up with you this next year...Off to Redding, Wayne

Well I suppose I ought to be the first to post some bad news.... my car broke on me... :(

Was doig magnificent, but that first big hill... I mashed it (1bbl carb here!) to get up the hill, so naturally at 55mph, it kicked down into second. Well, I went on my way up the hill, then looked over and saw my temp gauge climbing rather rapidly. It stopped at about oh say 210 degrees )I have a 195 thermostat) so this didn't bother me... what did bother me was the new noise I was hearing... a *pop* and suddenly I am smelling antifreeze, not only that, but it's going "phht phht phhht phht phht" as I drive. The temp gauge didn't climb any farther, and once over the hill, temp went back down.

Fast forward the medford/canyonville area.... lots o' hills. To say the least, I climbed most of them at about 35 mph... car was starting to get hot again. I pulled off about 12 miles north of Grants Pass, and decided to let her cool off while I looked some things over.

Here is what I found:
Antifreeze everywhere
An empty recovery tank
Lots 'o steam.

There were no leaks that I could see. Well anyways, I decided that after I let the car cool down, I could drive into GP, unfortunately there was a mile or so of uphill left. So I slowly took her up, and once I got to the top, there was a 3 mile downhill run, so I shut her off and coasted until I saw an exit ramp to pull off onto.

Once stopped, as luck would have it, some tow trucks showed up to help another guy out with his RV. I asked if they had any antifreeze (no) or water (also no), what they did tell me was that there was a store across the freeway where I could buy said water. So, back in the car to this store.

It was at this point in the parking lot of the store, that I realized I had a bigger problem than I thought. (I originally thought that the rad cap was bad since it had been leaking a bit earlier) Well turns out, that through all the steam, I found where it was coming from... and it wasn't the rad cap. It is coming out from behind the exhaust manifold, right around the #4 and #5 cylinders. I am still not sure what exactly the problem is, however, I do know that it is 1 of 3 things.

1. Busted freeze plug
2. Blown headgasket
3.Crack in block or head

Sweet. I am sitting in Grants Pass at the time of this post, waiting for Andrew and Jessica (kidd) to arrive, so they can tow me to Redding. I've already purchased freeze plugs, but have not been able to locate a headgasket for my hydro motor... not sure if there is a difference between it and a regular one.

In either case, the time is 7:20, so I should expect to see them around 830. I cannot thank them enough for coming to get me... I just hope that I can get her fixed... so I can get home....maybe even race on Sunday.

We'll see.

One other thing, after I filled her back up with water (and most of it came out shortly thereafter) I was able to drive the last 10 miles to Grants Pass w/o overheating... it just took over 2 gallons of water to get me here... and the cooling system is empty right now... so make that 3-4 gallons.

Talk to y'all soon!

It was a weekend filled with stuff getting broken.... Records and vehicles... I just got home and am going to sleep, had fun despite all the problems. The track has a few issues to work out before they run anything other than a street legal night...... :?

Welp... Got picked up by Andrew and company. Poor Jessica and Rhonda had to fight off "Drinki" as I later named him (long story). Got back, went to sleep, woke up the next morning and I pulled the stack.

Sure enough.... rusted through freeze plug.

Popped it out, put the new one in, slap 'er together......

and it leaks....

So, after getting extremely irritated at the freeze plug, the Dutras arrived, and soon thereafter, I was the proud owner of an expandable rubber freeze plug.. 8)

Loosened the stack, installed the plug, tightened everything back up... whaddya know... it doesn't leak anymore.. YAY!!! :D

Wayne helped me out a great deal in helping me get ready to race... he paid my racing expenses and got me past tech... without anyone actually looking at my car. The races were on!

We got 2 time trials, I was only able to run 1 of them. Long story short, I took myself out against wayne in the 3rd round (broke out), after taking out Aric in the second round. Wayne went on from there to take the win. :D Go Wayne!!!! There were 28 cars total in the points race.

On sunday, we got a few time trials in, and then we went into another elimination bracket. Race..wait...race...wait...race...wait...stage...wait...stage again...wait...race...wait... you get the picture. There were some very close races, I like to think I did well with a .09 light and ran a 19.455 on a 19.45 dial (I have the time slip to prove it!).

In the finals, there were 3 of us. Randy ('RDJ with a '73 Swinger) Jason (Driving a '66 Barracuda with a 3 on the tree... and he was cutting .004 lights! ) and myself in my '74 Swinger. Jason redlit against me, so I took the win for the first "final" and Randy got a bi-run.

So there we was.. '73 Swinger vs. '74 Swinger... who would win?

We both cut awesome lights, and both ran really close to our dial ins. It was probably the closest race of the weekend.

Randy beat me by .03 at the end of the track.

I actually lifted after getting past the first sensor (as I later found out, this was not the actual finish line... the second was... whoops... :? ) Even so, I doubt that an extra 10 feet of acceleration would cut .03 off my e.t.

In either case, it was a very close race.

Like Tristan says, it was an interesting weekend. The crew running the track was slightly less than intelligent, mixing up lane numbers and such. In the first final race, me vs. Jason, I had to tell the guy giving numbers to the tower that I was in the right hand lane... which I was... he just kept saying left... instead of right... hmm...

"No dude... I'm on your OTHER left. The left you want is over there." *points to Jasons car* Whoopee! :x

This happened quite a bit sadly. Oh, and the run that Randy and I were going to do was delayed because the tree didn't fire. We were both staged... torque converters loaded... ready to go... except.. there was no "go".

I'm not so sure that I would like to go there many more times if they are going to be like that.

Ok, done with my rant.

All in all, it was a fun weekend, and the best part was that there were alot of us slant sixers there... I think we were the largest group represented. Awesome!

Inquiring minds.... you can now rest easy...

Anyone who wants to add more info feel free. I apologize for the vagueness of the weekend description... my camera died... and therefore, I had no means to take pictures. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words... and I don't want to type that much.
Gotta go to sleep now.
