Do you have or can you borrow a timing light? You need one to see where you are at. And a vacuum leak can play havoc with everything. Rick |

Yea, I have my timing light with me and I have been using it. Have to actually get it to run to use though! LOL Had my sister keep an eye on it for me while I tried to keep it running so I had some idea of how far out it is... |

Okay, I check stuff today and finally got to crank on it a bit. It fired and I found that since I did not have the pcv hose on, I thought I would put my thumb over the pipe and see what happens. There is a ton of vacuum, and with my thumb over the hole, the van sits and runs... I went and grabbed the hose and popped it on and went to try it again - and the battery was dead again from me bumping it and only running it for a minute or two... Waiting on the battery to charge again... Am I doing all this right? I still need to get it to sit and idle enough to move it around and get the ass end out of the garage so I can warm it up and not kill us with gas fumes and be able to check the timing and valve lash while it's hot... Anyway, small progress, but for me - very huge progress... |

This is where it sat all broken and wounded for at least two weeks. Took this picture this morning...  AND this is what it looked like this evening after I got it together and running again!!!  Will be putting it together enough to take it for a spin tomorrow and see how it's doing. |

Already ran the rack and other than a couple, it was pretty damn close. Sounds good too. Sis and neighbor got to see how to adjust valves on a motor that was running - and she was absolutely skittish about the whole thing - telling me to be careful a couple of times! LOL She thought one of the push rods would come up and hit me in the face! hahahahah Wish there was a local that would take a look at this thing for me and let me know where it stands right now... Anyway, thanks for the help and the gaskets guys!!! Talk about a huge relief at this point anyway... I will know better what it's doing and how it's running after a few minutes out on the road tomorrow... |

Buttoned things up... After checking any and all stuff I could... fluids etc. Took it out on the road... sounds okay??? Not sure though??? Also, took it up to 40 to get it to shift and it did - felt hesitant - thinking maybe carb adjustment??? I turned into a parking lot of a park and checked - no leaks... seemed to be running hot and flipped the fan on - came back and parked back in the garage, and checked for leaks and drips underneath and so far have seen nothing... I guess I should try taking it out further and see what happens... Praying nothing blows up on me... |

Okay, so I took it over to where my sister was working and it does seem like it is running hot... definitely hotter than it was. Do I have valves too tight??? Is the timing still off? It seems like it is running okay - just the return spring is not pulling the throttle cable back like it should right now... Opinions? Suggestions??? Paranoias??? lol |

could be the timing is too advanced...my two cents. Where was it with the timing light? You don't want to exceed 30 degrees mechanical advance on a slant generally. That is, with the vacuum advance blocked off, the timing should not exceed 30 advanced when revving the engine to say 3000 rpms. If so, you want to dial it back (turn the distributor clockwise) to go back toward TDC. Does it "diesel" when you shut if off, like keep running or run on for a bit and sputter after you turn it off? Others can opine on the valve adjustment re: too much heat. Brian |

Make sure the cooling system is full of a 50/50 mix of radiator fluid and water, make sure there are no air pockets in the cooling system, I would start with the timing at about 7 BTDC, definitely lash the valves when hot, make sure there are no exhaust obstructions. Belly pan hooked up? |

no dieseling at all... starts the same as it did before... have no clue on the timing... do you know how hard it is to "check' the timing on an A108/100??? taking the doghouse apart every time is not a frickin easy job at all just to "check" the timing... and then putting it all back together to take it out for a test drive... I have to take an hour or so just to do that part and it takes me longer to get it done and back together... a couple of hours for me to just 'check" the timing... frickin all hurts like a sumof a gun... why is it I can't find someone close enough to take a look at this thing whenever I am in need of expert help??/ something that should normally take a few minutes in the normal world takes me hours to struggle with to get done... I'm thinking seriously about selling my stuff and getting something more modern and easier for others to work on for me now that I am getting old and can't keep up with all this... |

What temperature are you getting to? It sounds like you have an electric fan? What did you set the timing to initially? |

I actually have no idea what it is set to... I got it running and when I looked at where it was, it was no where near the timing mark. whenever I tried to move it to the mark - it dies or does not start or backfires... Where it is now, it runs... |
