Yes you can be a killer deadly bracket racer with a 15-20 second car too.

One of my dad's buddy's did that for years with a Stock 3.0 V6 Plymouth Voyager.

I won many Friday Night Trophy Dashes in my bone stock 72 Dart running high 19s - low 20s against 9 and 10 second cars. They hated it, but I have a stack of trophies... Slow can be very fun!

A search shows that in 1974 a 225 slant is listed at 105hp net. That is 25 more ponies then I need to reach my goal. I should probably hook up the A/C. At least it would keep me cool at that blistering 20 second pace.

You cant really use A/C at the track - the track workers / management get mad when your condensate drain dumps water all over the starting line... but use it to / from the track!

Yeah, I expected that, and I expect the A/C is already figured into the net HP rating.

As we all know, skinny tires on the front makes a car go faster (40 years of car magazines have assured me of this). So I will put the biggest tire on the front of the car that I can. Since I am cheap and already have a set of 15x7 rims and P235 60 tires, I'll use them.

That 20 second goal is getting easier to reach now. There is a definent miss in the engine. Now to figure out where and why.

I picked up a set of Cragar 10 D hole rims for the Duster. There are 15x7 with 4.25" backspacing. Surprising they match the 25 year old rims from Superior that I had on an old '72 Dodge D100. Those are 15x8 with 3.5" of backspacing. I have 4 of them. They are kinda rough and should be blasted and powered coated. It would be cheaper to buy new. But Cragar doesn't make rims with 3.5" of backspacing.

I have been playing around with tire sizes for the rear. Some of the numbers mentioned on FABO don't make sense. On a stock rear setup. .I.e the springs are in the stock location and a stock 8.25 is being used, there is only 5" from the brake flange to the spring. There is more then one time, where people are proclaiming, they are running 4.25" backspacing and P275x60 rear tires on a "stock" Duster. Now let's do the math. A P275x60 has a 11" section width. Subtract 8 and you get 3. Divide by 2 and the overhang is 1.5. Add this to the backspacing and you get 5.75. So that combination doesn't work unless you are using a spacer or a B-body rear axle. But these are never mentioned.

Some people must be having backspace envy and are inflating numbers.

My calculations shows that the biggest tire that you can run in the back is a P255x60 with 3.5" of backspace. Anything else requires heroics.

On my '67 Valiant with an 8 1/4 axle I ran 255/40R17 on +28mm offset wheels with a 1" spacer. Take away the 1" spacer and that's +3 mm (1/8") positive offset. I couldn't get my pinky finger between the tire and spring, but it didn't rub even on the race track. On a Duster there is more room to the outside so you can run a negative offset wheel and more tire.

Well, a long boring Saturday. Typical Seattle weather. Rainy. I am spending the afternoon watching reruns. Which leads to the question. Did Mr Faber and Rowdy ever get the cows to where ever they were going? "round them up, git them out, rawHIIIDEEE".

Well any way. I was browsing thru the Oregon Cams cam card on this site and and I think that the #1313 and #1672 look interesting. Any comments on suitability? I am favoring the #1313 grind. This is for the Dart. I will start putting an engine together this spring. So i need to do some planning.

I took the Duster for a trip around the block.

I think this is the first time in 7 years that it has moved under it's own power. Some stuff still needs to be fixed.

The front ride height is out of wack, I thought I had the T-bars were set right, but the drivers side is sitting higher.

The miss is gone in the engine. I suspect it just needed to run, to clear out crap. I sat there and listen as the engine cracked and popped, and then it settled into a nice idle.

The transmission over speeds on the 2 to 3 shift. This may be another thing that will go away with usage. I can manually down shift into first.

The power steering makes loud strange noises. I think the pump needs to be replaced. I already did the hoses, which were leaking. Say what you want about the power steering, but I found it refreshing compared to my Dodge Ram, which is overly heavy.

I spent some considerable time trying to get the front fenders to fit the tires. But I managed to clip the front lower corner on the drivers side anyway.

I have new tires all around. P235x60 on front and P255x60 on the back. With 15x7, 4.25 back spacing and 15x8, 3.75 back spacing.

I need an exhaust system. I have though of buying one of the Summit kits, and use one side on the Duster and the other on the Dart.

It rides like a '55 Chevy. This is with "340" bars on the front and 6 leaf springs in back and KYB shocks all around.

Gawd it was fun.

Sounds like great progress. Enjoy the mods, tuning, driving... Nothing like getting a car running and driving after years of work.
