AFAIK, Keisler does not sell T5 kits at all, only the bigger Tremec trannys. Just bolting on a plate may work OK, but you really need to put the plate on the BH and centerbore it to match the BH. Using the bolt holes as reference will not give you the concentricity needed for the crank/trans input centerlines. Yes, you can use either V6 or V8 trannys, and either will require a little extension to bring the pilot bearing onto the input snout, the V6 will require less. Lou |

| Post subject: | another T5 consideration |
The more I anticipate this T5 deal, the more I prepare fitups in my mind. I am not doing a car, rather I am doing a '64 d100 shortbed pickup. While right now I am enjoying doing a A833OD conversion from 3 speed, I know that after a while I will want to try something else. It came to me that I could try a T5 from a Jeep with a transfer case. This would give me a 10 speed truck, which is real high in the just to see if I can do it category. But all the mental fitups don't answer if this is a workable idea or not. I have never seen a T5 in the flesh, but don't see any reason a T5 with a transfer case would'n't bolt in just as well as one without...assuming I cut another hole for the transfer levers too. Any opinions? rock '64d100 |

You will need to add a hump in the floor for the transfer case....no big.... You will need to do some driveshaft work. Using low range with just rear wheel drive will be very hard on your rear axle,,,,the torque multipication is huge. I do this with my work truck at times to pull grades but I have a 2 ton truck 14 bolt dually rear with single wheel on it. I can make mebbe 30mph in drive in low range. 1st to 2nd shift at less than 5mph. With a 5 speed I doubt even 2nd gear would be usable in low range. |

| Post subject: | Update - ballpark price and machine shop is onboard |
James Longhurst and I stopped by Hamilton Machine Works in Raleigh and discussed plans with them. He couldn't give me a hard price up front, but it will be somewhere between $140-200 for both modifying the bellhousing (steel adapter plate) and making a spacer ring (collar) to mount a standard Mustang pilot bearing in the crankshaft. I will drop off a BH, T5 trans, and a detailed drawing in the next couple of weeks and he'll make one prototype first, then we can get a hard price and look at getting the rest done as a group. Thanks to Rock for the shop recommendation. They seem like an excellent place and Robby Hamilton was great to talk with. Once again, we will ONLY be doing this for the OD 4spd/Slant bellhousings and T5 transmissions, which I think was clear before. Everyone should let me know what crank hub diameters you have, and T5 trans type you will use (input shaft length) V8, V6 or 4cyl. I would prefer to avoid small hub cranks (pre 68), but could be talked into it. Price might be slightly higher for those small hub crank/pilot spacer rings. If you DO NOT want a crank hub/pilot spacer, then let me know. You might want to do this if you don't know which trans you will use. I expect this will knock $20 off the price and it should be easy to get that made locally at any shop. Best thing is for everyone to send their bellhousings to me with a deposit of $50 and once I have them all I can take them over for the work. We might get this stuff done before Xmas, but more likely in January. My home address for shipping: Lou Madsen 100 Kelly Ct Chapel Hill, NC 27516 Feel free to post or PM me with questions. Thanks, Lou |

I'm not sure what your plan for the low speed gears that you would gain, but on my truck with 4.10 gears, 1-5 gets me to a max of about 30mph. Now the cool part would be using it off road as a 2wd truck with a low gear. My old truck (non-mopar) had a dual transfer case which gave ridiculously low crawling gears and mimicked what you describe--2wd with low. It was only good for getting unstuck or climbing hills or rocks. Not driveable in any appreciable way on the road. Sounds like a challenge to say the least! MJ |
