That's neat. I'd stay away from any small screen type filter, though (like the heater hose filters shown). I've made my own filters out of stainless steel screen. The area is not large, so they tend to get clogged up quickly and hinder cooling. One advantage to the stocking technique is that the debris gets contained in a lump at the toe end which just floats around in the upper tank and does not hinder flow in any appreciable way. Of course, the see through filters have a great advantage, but do you really want to show off how much crud you've got circulating around in you cooling system?

I just used some vinegar to clean up some rusty screws (sitting outside in a cup for awhile)


Let it sit overnight, and it got rid of the rust. Screws actually look pretty good (but not as shiney as you get by dipping in HCl...).

As vinegar is pretty mild (and cheap at Costco). I think if you run it and let it sit overnight it should be safe

good plan. Well i'll put it all back together, drive it over to the garage, and take the front end apart and get back to fixing this in a few weeks. I'm sure something will come clean. I'd like to take take the thermostat out and extend the upper radiator hose and run the car while filling through the radiator to try and get some big crud out. In the end I think it should all clean up fine.

Anything special I should add for helping it while it sits for a month or more at a time when I can't drive it?
