As I said, technically not the same but related. Actually the force of gravity, therefore weight, does vary slightly according to the composition of the Earth's crust in any particular location but mass is constant. Gravity meters, which measure the force exerted by a known mass are used extensively in mineral exploration. On the other hand, you're right, for all practical purposes they can be treat alike. |

I missed this one so far. A good cold air system really can help make more horsepower. It does have the benefit of supporting the burn of more fuel and cutting down on detonation at the same time. You may need to jet up some to see the increase, unless you were too rich already. It can be dramatic if it is very cold out or you have very high underhood temps, ten percent or more power is realistic with a 70 degree drop. To get a better understanding you can look up Boyles law, Daltons law and the universal gas law which is both of them combined. It is actually fairly simple and easy to understand math and you can figure out what kind of variations in power output are possible at different temps. A cold air system needs to be large enough and you should try to make it as smooth as possible or it can actually be a restriction at higher rpm's or do strange things at odd rpms. And yes those 12 volt blowers are total BS. It would take a large amount of wattage (HP in different terms) to actually help and not be a restriction. At low rpm and part throttle it does not matter anyway. It is usually better to try to draw air from the cowl if possible. There is plenty of pressure at the base of the windshield, it will not pick up dirt and large amounts of water like below the bumper and will not be so turbulent. Trying to ram air in often causes problems at different speeds and rpms due to turbulence. You need plenty of smooth flowing cool air. A 3" smooth bore hose should be plenty for a slant. If you have a late air cleaner with a round baffle around the carb I would remove that baffle too, it is just a silencer and does not work like a velocity stack. Do not remove the baffle at the snorkel inlet. In very warm climates or the summer you can unplug the vacuum line and remove the hot air hose to help keep it cool. Then you can just put them back in cooler weather. |
