Post subject:  got it done

Ok,
i got just about everything installed, i put the original choke control back in (for now) and it works again! Also adjusted the idle down to 900 rpm's. I just have to get the correct breathers and hook up the cannister (just need to make a trip to the parts store). Now, on to the next issue, what causes oil smoke to come out of the valve cover when the car is running? Also, the valve train seems a bit loud (ticky)

Smoke out of valve cover = Check to make sure your PCV system is working correctly.

smoke out the valve cover.... is that because of the cheapie valve cover?
(no baffles) Did it smoke like that before with the old cover?

I honestly did not notice any smoke, but that was with the stock cover and pcv in-tact. The smoke is coming out of where the pcv is supposed to go, i do not have the proper breather yet. But, i figured it was not supposed to smoke like that!. Honestly, the car ran and drove pretty well when i got it, it was a one owner, old lady car. I only started doing replacements because all the hoses were so dried up, etc so i figured why not replace everything i could get at! The hesitation in accelleration is gone now with the new carb and the choke installed. Does it really matter that much about the cheap valve cover, i mean, if it is going to be big deal i would rather clean and paint the original.

You'll get smoke out of the valve cover if the PCV system isn't intact and working. I've already put in my vote as to which valve cover to use, but the choice is yours! :-)

I'm curious why you think the Offy valve cover will work better given that it also lacks baffles. I don't question the higher quality of construction but I don't see how it is functionally any different unless I'm missing something.

I'm curious why you think I voted for the Offy valve cover!

Well after re-reading your post I can say that you did say the factory cover was the best so I guess technically that's your vote. The remark about the Offenhauser being better is what struck me and I found that curious in light of the lack of baffles in that one as well. On the other hand, I didn't say you voted for the Offy, only that you said it was better.
