There is a weird vibration at idle and all other rpms. It might just be that the timing has not be set. In Drive with wheels up, the wheels will rotate forward but it takes more throttle to spin them up than it dose in Reverse. I have yet to get a 1-2 shift. In Reverse holding the brake there is no noise but the vibration is still there. If the brake is released (Reverse) just enough to roll the tire (jacked up), there is a noise/grind/thud at every 1/4 turn of the wheel. Holding the brake hard (no wheel turning) and giving it 1/3 throttle, there is no grinding.
I personaly don't think its the converter.
I plan to set it on the ground and see if it will move forward. I am pretty sure it will move backwards.

I have no experience in that much stall with wheels in the air... but I'm sure that if you have a 3200 stall speed under load, it will take forever and heavy foot on the throttle to produce any shifting.

Turned drive shaft by hand and there is a definet problem. Removed transmission and dumped out converter and found only clean new fluid. Turned input shaft and it rotates loudly. The problem is in the trans. Haven't pulled the pan and don't think I will. I'll wait to see it pulled at the trans shop. Wouldn't want to void the warranty.
PS Varified input shaft is the larger one.

Brenn, is the output shaft in the trans, from a 67 or 66 trans, or a 68 up?
I am not positive, but I think the splines on the end (the end inside the trans) of the output shaft are different between the early and late trans, also. I know I tried to put a "low" gear set in my 65 trans, and couldn't do it because of the difference in the splines on the output shaft, not matching. I was unable to swap the output shaft in my trans, do to the 65 trans, haveing the flanged style output extension, on the case. It is possible (and I think likely) the 66-67 trans also had the 65 style splines on the output shaft, and they changed in 68, when the input shaft changed. This is just a guess/suggestion. Let me know if this is the problem.

Might want to bring that to their attention. Like I said I'm not sure on the splines, but it could account for the problem, if I am right.
What track will you go to? If you let me know if you are going to make it, I wll think about going, also.

Souuds like the torque convertor bolts are hitting something, thats why it quits in reverse and brakes on, the reversed torque is pulling it away from what it is touching. Just a guess could be wrong. Double check any inspection/adaptor plates ( if using a light weight late model starter some use a shim plate)

Anyway look at the convertor bolt heads for signs that they are hitting something. Or any other part of the convertor for that matter. The only thing inside of the tranny that would sound like that would be the park paw and you said it still does it in park. As long as the park is really working then that eleminates that.

Some pictures of the rebalanced torque converter.

Not pretty but it runs smooth.

Wow, that's a lot of weight to add. Who originally built the torque converter?

I take it Midwest will be getting a call, on Monday?
What was the problem with the trans, itself?

Called Midwest Friday just after the balancing and he said that its impossible that a converter could have left his shop like that. He basicly told me that its likely been balanced incorrectly at my local shop and don't run it. He said he would build me another one if I sent it back.
In regards to the trans. Not sure yet. Get this.. the employee that built it was and is in a bad mood. His boss is scared to ask him what was wrong with it. The owner of the shop ask if I could call next week to ask him. Alot of people recommend his shop but this just seems crazy

The boss is afraid to talk to the employee? There's something wrong with that picture.
