D'uh! Had a brain fart, as far as dwell/timing. I guess that comes from not having to tune a points car in at least a few years. You know what they say;use it or lose it;

First thing, let's verify that your timing mark isn't telling you lies (TDC as indicated by the timing marks is TDC in reality): See this post and subsequent followups for methods of making that test.

Ok I think I fixed the problem today. This morning I couldn't even put it in drive without it dying out immediately. The stats were: Idle - 1100 RPM in Park (that was just to try to keep it running in drive, which didn't work) 0 RPM in Drive Vacuum - 18 (with mixture screws turned out 4 1/2 turns) Timing - 7* BTDC Dwell - 51* So I decided to just start with finding TDC and go from there. I pulled the #1 cylinder up to the top and found out that my mark was spot on. So I repainted it with a white stripe and decided to move on to the dwell. I removed the distributor and as I turned the rotor, I couldn't even get the points to open up at all. They were closed the entire time. So I gapped the points to .020" and reinstalled the distributor. Started the car up, tuned on it a bit and it purrs like a kitten. I can barely even tell its running in drive because the idle is so nice and smooth. Heres the stats I ended up with. They aren't perfect but I almost don't even wanna mess with it again for now with how nice its running. Idle - 750 RPM in park, 550 RPM in drive Vacuum - 17 (mixture screws turned out 3 turns instead of the 4 1/2) Timing - 5* BTDC Dwell - 40* I know the vacuum should be reading higher (even though I can't find any leaks, and yes i've gone through the carb cleaner test as well as the soapy water with pressure test). I also know the dwell should be between 41-46*, but I wasn't about to pull it again for one degree. I'm just glad it's running like a normal car for now. I'd like to drive it for a month and then see if the problem occurs again because it seems to get worse over time. Especially when I take it out on the freeway. I really appreciate all the help. I had no idea the points could have been causing all this. Oh yeah, so far I haven't had any run on at all. Although I've only shut it off about 5 or 6 times so far. |

Two separate shops replaced the distributor this last year because of a "loose shaft". I can tell ya one thing, im never taking this thing to a shop again. It's either figure it out or don't drive it. Too bad its my daily driver Its a 71 Ted. |

Its a 71 Ted. You know, the SINGLE best thing about electronic ignition is that there's no side-loading on the distributor shaft at all, and the bushings flat never wear out. Not having to putz with points is just a side-benefit
