It's all in and running, minor things to do speedo hook up, reroute oil line to gauge, install new temp gauge, fuel level gauge.

Well I thought I had a plan B to deal with overheating at high speeds, no gas gauge/no speedometer.

I drove across the mountains in sloppy wet snow to borrow a friends tow dolly. It only took 5 hours return cuz I timed the ferries perfectly.
After furious tire swapping to get some decent treads on the dolly and narrow enough front tires on the Valaint to fit on the dolly we went for the requisite spin.

I was cautious about this.....never dollied before,....towed enough to wonder....

I crossed the causeway at 50 mph ......seemed OK......decided to giver on the way back.....

At the store I whipped a doughnut and immediately knew something was wrong. I looked in the mirror .....the Valaint was beside me!

The reach on the dolly had folded 90 degrees. I unloaded the Valaint in the middle of the junction of the Burton Main Rd and the highway 6 and towed the dolly beside me like a grass mower.

Made it home OK ....went back with De and got the Valaint....no damage ....no injury.

The dolly needs a new reach....but that is easy. I now know everything I need to know about tow dollys.

Tow bars are illegal here.

I have 24 hours to come up with a workable Plan C.

All the passes are still requiring chains or traction tires.
That's an eventuality I hadn't counted on.
I wonder if my 205R14 M+S street tires are going to qualify.

So Sandy, how is plan "C" coming along? I'm glad nothing got damaged!

Allen and I are still "thrashing" but both cars are running an ready but a race car is never done....
I have always had a weak fuel system in the Lancer so I am adding a second electric fuel pump, we should have that done tonight.
I am filling the bottles during lunch today and getting some race gas.
We are on track for leaving mid day on Thursday.

I called it.....

I can see a storm moving in from the west....should start snowing in a couple of hours. Ive poured over the forecasts and there aint no way around Wednesdays huge storm. Its supposed to snow overnight here and the weather goes as far east as Rapid City (1 day east) and as far south as Elko Nv.

I can put 4 snows on the car....chance it....but then what? I could bring the summers with me....and have absolutly no tool/luggage space.

For those who doubt the reality of bumping into snow I took this picture in my yard 1 hour ago.

I hear you Sandy! Two months to Medford. We should have some good roads by then. Better safe. Perhaps you can nail your overheat problem in the meantime.

If Fopar and I don't leave tonight, we may not clear the Siskiyou pass. We'll just have to chance it. He had to work today, and I need to take my pooch into the vet in about an hour.

The storm coming in down here will hit tonight. Snow level is estimated at 500 to 1000'. I've got chains, but that would be a miserable way to cross Mount Ashland. I've spent enough time sitting at Highway Patrol Roadblocks in the mountains. It's 50-50 right now.

It's starting to sound like I can. Hopefully Fopar will get all the wrinkles out of his car by morning. You'll know if I show up on your doorstep by myself.
That isn't the way I want to do it! :(

Fopar's tranny is exibiting some strange behavior.

It sounds like his Valve body is doing something weird. I'm half way tempted to drive down to his place tonight and take my FSM with me.

Hopefully he'll check his PM inbox and call my home phone. I don't dare call down there at this hour with all the munchkins in bed already.

Andrew! You've regressed!

Visiting with TF in Reno. Fopar and I finished off his beer supply. We'll pour Fopar into bed in a little bit. He keeps nodding off. You know how old folks are.

The trip so far has been uneventful. Except for my flat tire, and my brake failure. That and I whined till Fopar let me pull over for a burger.

Fortunately it only rained and snowed on us for 410 of 496 miles. Since I couldn't actually see Fopar's '53 in front of me, it definitely helped that I know the smell of all that new paint burning in.

I'm glad now that I didn't remove the carpet. My feet were still frozen going over the last three passes. Nothing like watching the fuel gauge accelerating toward the "E" while pulling a 7% grade with a Mad Man in a /6 powered '53 Ford dragging you around at 70mph in the 0-5" HG range on your manifold. Can you say Power Valve? Sure, I knew you could!

Vegas or Bust! How much is a ticket these days on GreyHound?

:D
