So this will bring up some dead stuff.

How did that trans fair out?
Since Im getting ready to dive into the V8 guts into a slant case. Im reading all I can about what does and dosent fit, along with what parts. It will be for a turbo build so I like the idea of upgrades parts and a shift kit.

You'll have to ask Dart270 about the trans as I sold it to him. After I built it I started building a Barracuda to run at Bonneville and sold off lots of extra parts to finance that, then my marriage went to hell and I sold the Barracuda.

It worked well in the Project V 66 Valiant racecar for a while (one road race weekends, an autoX, and about 8 drag days, no street miles). Right now it is slipping some on the 2-3 upshift. I will try adjusting the band and and see if that fixes it - fingers crossed. Otherwise, it will have to come out... Before that, the shifts were hard and up/down shifts all worked well.

For comparison, I had a 904 professionally rebuilt with manual valve body and HD everything. That one blew up after one RR weekend and about 30 drag passes. Spent more on that trans than any other auto trans ever, for me. I think it rolled the sprag on a jerky hook up burnout. I was REALLY bummed about that one.

Also, my 1965 PB auto had V8 guts and a backyard shiftkit installed by my buddy Pat Carnitz in 1993. It has survived maybe 6-8 road course weekends, a few hundred drag passes, and 50k of street abuse. No sign of any trouble last time I used it.

So then I should he good to go w a shift kit and V8 guts. Ill probly go w trans go TF-2, do I buy the rebuild kit for the V8 then? Since Id need the extra discs id assume so. Id like to get 95% of this narrowed down and then do a nice how to w pics since we dont really have one but we have 40+ posts on v8 guts and 904s etc.

I remember probably around 1970, my dad bringing the whole 100cc Hodaka motorcycle engine into our small kitchen and doing a rebuild on the top end and some other things I don't remember. It was cold outside and this made perfect sense to me as a 9 year old. It did not make near as much sense to my wonderful mother!!!

Yeah, dad only did that once!!

One thing I can tell you for sure doesn't end well, do NOT soak your Quadrajet in a carb cleaner bucket and then use your wife's dishwasher to wash it all out. That cleaner soaks into the plastic liner of the dishwasher and really, really pisses off the wife.

Not me, but a buddy of mine did it. Got to buy a new dishwasher for his troubles. It did clean the QJ up real good though.

Threads like this make me want to buy an old dishwasher off of Craigslist and install it in my garage along with an old oven. One to wash parts and one to heat parts. 8)

Funny you say that Reed, as that's where the old one went after I bought an $800 stainless from lowes for 500ish.

Just haven't hooked it up since no water supply but that was the plan. And when I replace the W/D w new ones I'll put the old ones somewhere to use for dirty shop rags/gloves, etc.

Still figuring out parts. I'm leaning towards the transgo tf-2, w the Borg clutches and Idk from there. Steels? Reverse band? Do I buy for the year of the V8? Ahhhh, never done a tran...almost left myself open for jokes there...we will go with, never rebuilt a transmission before. 8) but like the carbs, I was not a carb guy either but I know Hollys now.

Yes to the BW clutches and steels. Yes to the Trans-Go TF2 shift kit.

The low/reverse band has to fit the case. The band anchor is the primary difference between the A904 and the A998/999. I don't feel that you need a trick low/reverse band unless you use a manual valve body that applies that band in low and maybe not even then. The intermidiate band gets plenty of action and should be a good part.

I like the feedback on this, helps a bit. Right now I went and looked in the shed. Of the 3 I have:
One w out torque converter, non lock up, has 074-2 or -4 bead welded? Into the top of the case where the bell bolts to the block.
#2 has a TC and the gravel shield keeps me from pulling it off right now so I'm going w non LU. It has 111-2 or -4 on the top of the case.
#3 is the one I pulled from the JY and it has LU, verified by the smooth spot on the input shaft as well as a single wire that feeds a solenoid. I'm still tracking if the wire needs to see 12v to LU or if that is an override to keep it from doing it. It has 1987 in the top of the case as well.

So it's looking like I'll order the tf-2 w BW clutches and steels. And the master kit or whatever they are called for all the seals etc. this will turn into an in depth "can and can't" type write up. So I'll have to move the 64' wheel horse to get them out and get at least two torn down, one V8 and one of the other two slant cases.

More to come as I get it, so far 10-12# of boost is fun but I'm ready for it to be auto so I can just build boost and not drop w each shift.

My good 904 has a Powerglide band for the l/r band because it is wider than a Mopar band.
