Quote: Too bad the car doesn't need paintwork (or, um, have steel fenders); the fender louvers from an '81-'83ish Lincoln Continental wouldn't look bad on a Dart, I don't think:
I'm not worried about the body work. Where there is a will, there is a way. I am sure I can find a vent that will mount in a way that I can trim out the hole so it looks nice. I really like the vents in the Shelby kit cars. If I can find a manufacturer of those that will sell the vents seperately, then I could start with those. Another good candidate would be the BMW z3, atlhough I would have to modify them to eliminate the BMW medalian. And many of the Land Rovers have vents of some kind. There are many options. And those Lincoln vents look promising. ![]() I looked under the fenders last night while tweeking the UCA heim joint adjustments (as per my front end man's instructions) and conluded that it would not be hard to build a box that carries vented air from the inner fender to the upper, outer fender. First, I have to settle on a vent casting or assembly, and then build the boxes to fit those. I have installed plastic inner fenders from a late model Aspen, and those would have to be trimmed to fit around the boxes. I really think this is not a bad idea. And, I appreciate all the feedback. It is getting the old grey matter focused. Sam |

Quote: I was under the impression that the vents on the fenders (ala Superbird & Daytona) were there only to release high pressure air from under the fenderwell, thus improving handling on the speedways.
Actually they are only functional on the Daytona's. The scoops on the 'birds are just bolted onto the fender where as the Daytona's fenders were cut open. The street Daytona's had wire mesh covering the opening but supposedly the hole was there to allow tire clearance on the race cars. The downforce would actually force the tire into the top of the fender. The rest is history (or myth -Mac ![]() I was just joking about using them on Sam's Dart. Without the nose and wing they would look out of place! |

Sorry I've been gone so long. Am rebuilding a room in the house and running out of evening working light. To deal with the heat, I ended up installing a 2 1/4" x 10" heater floor vent in the highest vertical part of the inner fender at the back of the engine compartment. Then I removed the shield that protects the door jambs from wheel splash, so heat can go back towards the door jamb. I have ordered a pair of BMW M3 fender vents. When they are installed in the outer fender, I will build a new shield that protects all from wheel splash, and directs the air towards the outer vent. The heater floor vent has a typical set of closing and opening vanes to shut it off in the winter when I want the heat to maybe stay in. I will keep you posted, but so far it is better, even without the vent in the outer fender.. I think I am going to move the ECU into the pass compartment. It will involve a lot of wiring, but I am coming to believe that a more stable temp for the ECU will help things as well. Thanks again for the tips before. I have lurked here from time to time, even though I am not posting. Sam |
