Welcome aboard Chuck. And that is a really nice car you got there. It will work into a handsome machine with time and attention. YOu are on the right track. Good wheels and tires will help also. You can look up threads about this on the forum. But, in general, bigger wheels and lower profile tires will help. SAm |

Thanks, Sam. I'm hoping the old Valiant will really get some TLC courtesy of the advice I've found here. Really like the Swinger. |

Happy to help out. One way to repay the board members would be to run the car at a Slant Six drag race. Valdosta, GA will likely be the closest to you next year. If you can afford it, I highly recommend the 20:1 manual steering box upgrade too. Charlie's good stock one will do well, though. I have had only tight 24:1 in my cars, and they have worked well for road course and everything else, but I am happy with the 20:1 I just swapped into my relatively heavy '68 Dart. I just put a 16:1 in the lighter '64 Dart but it's not running yet, so we'll see how that goes. I have high hopes... I am a huge fan of the Holley 500 2bbl carb (aftermarket) with elec choke. Simplicity, power, mileage, driveability... Lou |

I doubt I'd be able to get anyone's attention at a Slant Six race, but it'd definitely be fun to show up. I'm sure somebody would have parts for sale too. The one Charlie's got is from a stock 64 Dart. Nothing special, but I've got a good quarter turn of slop in the wheel I have now, which is just ridiculous. I've seen some Holley 500 marine carbs out there with electric chokes. Would they work for a car? Just trying to weigh all the options. Also, I'm having a hard time finding a two-barrel carb to four barrel intake plate. Would that have to be custom made? I've been looking at that one and the Holley 390 Four Bbl. They both seem to be about the same price. I'm sure I'd have to get some modified linkage as well. I'll keep searching the forums on that one. |

Thanks for the tip. Was that used on a daily driver or a race car? I'm thinking the 390 may be a little too complicated for my needs. |

My semi daily driver - when I get fed up with the Hitech Jetta tdi NOT complicated - The primaries flow less than the slantsix BBD , If it wants more there is two more barrels Try to source a 4bbl manifold even if you are going 2bbl - 2bbl carb to 4bbl manifold addaptors exist - transdapt etc makes them. To run a 500 - which is WAY over kill for a daily BTW on a single barrel manifold is a bit of a waste I think. 465 Is as big as I will go on a daily and then in a 4150/60 4bbl Stomping on the throttle with a 500 -big torque hole all 500 cfm at once Doing it with a 390 gives 195 with the same available extra as and when the engine needs it. 4150/60 carbs have vacuum secondaries |

Hmm. Sounds like a smart choice. Thanks for giving me another option to think about. |

Keep in mind that a 500 2bbl (3 in Hg pressure drop) is not rated the same as a 500 4bbl (1.5 in Hg). A 500 2bbl is much more driveable. 390 could work well too. I have used the 500 2bbl on about 8 different engine buildups and it has worked well on every one. Probably 50k street and race miles total. This carb lauches the car better than any 4bbl I've used (and tuned). I don't know anything about marine apps. You might compare numbers with Summitracing.com carb part number. You want the 50cc accel pump 2300 series and may have to add an elec choke kit. Going to a race will introduce you to "The Slanted Family" in person - fantastic folks. You'll have fun with the car too! Lou |

Lou,Have you tried the Holley 350 model (aftermarket) 2300 series? I have that (part number 7448) and it seems to be working well, but I am still tuning it. Do you have much experience with it? |

I'm looking forward to it. I've never raced a car (on a track anyway), so it'll be another fun "talent" to learn. As for the carb debate...I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. (I'll still liking the 2 barrel idea, though.) |

Have not tried 350 carb. Seymour has run fast (low/mid 14s) and well on the street with one in his 62 Val, though. Lou |

Just calculated the required airflow for an engine making max power at 5500 with a 220 duration@50 cam and ported heads for street application taking a 85% volumetric efficiency. 305 cfm..... Does it sound right? |

That calc sounds about right, but it is only a guideline. I believe it assumes no restriction caused by the carb. The real world can be a different place. That said, many people use too big of a carb and get into trouble. If I had tried the 350 Holley 2bbl, I likely would be recommending that, but my 500 has been great. The one (used) 390 I had was junk, and I never tried another. Lou |
