My timing tab is not attached to the timing cover. It is more like it is bolted from above, around the water pump. I haven't seen the bolt yet. But for sure, it is hanging down from that area. Since it is raining a little bit, and the night comes quicker, I will try to track that down on a better day. I won't be putting this back together quickly. Mostly because, what takes a mechanic one hour takes me a day.

I think I found the problem. Check out the bottom of my Holley. It looks like there should be a screw in the top middle area. But nothing is there. The little black dot at the top of the photo, is the little marble I was talking about. And it looks like the head broke off at this location, and got sucked in. Maybe the rest of the screw then came out and got sucked in. And that would be why two cylinders.




With that, I believe the mystery is solved. Unless someone knows that Holley doesn't put a screw there.

Nothing. That looks like the dumpout for the PCV, to me.

How big a "marble" are we talking about here? Given the battered condition of the spark plugs and the likelihood that the engine was detonating, it could easily just be a glob of piston . Doc's question is a good one: does the "marble" stick to a magnet?

As for correcting the timing: it doesn't matter whether you use the early or late setup, the critical thing is that all the parts must match and the damper must be in good, unslipped condition. So you use either a '61-'66 damper and timing indicator, or you use a '67+ damper and timing indicator/cover, but don't mix the components or the timing mark will be invisible and/or inaccurate. New dampers are available; they have two marks for compatibility with early and late covers.

With the head off, it is easy to find true TDC and add a mark.
If the damper has/is slipping... the mark you add will also shift position... so keep an eye on that possibility, if you choose to remark your current damper.

The marble is the size between a pea and BB, and a small screwdriver fits in it well. My coworker agrees with me, that it used to be a screw head.

As for the timing, I found out from Dave that we are not at TDC. I have to move it some. But he believes once I do, it will be correct for the passenger side of the car. He thinks everything else looked okay.

I will try to get that figure out later this week. Tonight after voting, it was too dark.

I had my coworker look at the Holley. He agrees nothing is missing from it. So it is still a mystery where the screw came from.

Okay, I zoomed in on the marble, but it is not too clear. But it should be a little obvious it was a screw head. And yes, a magnet picked it up.



The slot runs from 0700 to 0100 or 0800 to 0200.

Take it from someone that has found all kinds of "crazy crap" inside of engines... don't spend a lot of time trying to solve the "mystery" of how it got in there, it's better to spend your energy fixing the problem and getting the vehicle running again.

I am not worried about where it came from anymore. Just puzzled. First priority is getting that timing tab in the correct place. Hopefully, on Sunday will be when I start putting everything back together. As I am busy this Saturday. By the end of Saturday the 15th, it should be fired up. Can't wait, since I have a Flowmaster 40 waiting to be installed.

Should get my Remflex gasket tomorrow.

A Flowmaster 40? Really? If you like interior resonance you're all set. If not...

I heard the Flowmaster 40 on a car at the race. It was louder than I expected. But I loved the sound. If I don't like it after it is on there, I can always go back to the Turbo. After seeing the video of my daughter racing it, and hearing the hiss from the Turbo muffler, I decided to wake up the neighborhood. Plus, I love the sound of it on You Tube Flowmaster 40. I agree, I may not like it. But we will see.... First I have to get it going.

Tonight I took off the dist cap and rotor. They looked okay but I am changing them anyway. And tried to see where the timing tab was hooking up to the engine. I then saw I need to get under the car to see that. So that waits for another day. Probably early Saturday morning. I have about 2 hours at the most on that day.
