I don't believe that whole more power neccessarily means that you will automatically suck more gas. Your not taking into fact the efficency of how you use that gas, your gears, power band (in/out), or for the simply the fact turbo four cylinders will run with big block numbers and at least pull off double digit gas numbers.
Also, ArmyofChuckness gave you all the information you needed to get started. Dan metioned we weren't paying attention to what you asked for, but with a general performance question Chuck gave you exactly the basic recipe. I would disagree with the 2-4 barrel comments, I like to act proactive. I went from the 1 to 2 to 4/EFI before I was happy with the outcome of how my car was running. I couldn't find the proper electronic choke for my holley 2 barrel, but I'm pretty sure you can order them on the 390. Why spend the money on the 2 barrel when for a little more you can have everything you need when you want to shave the head and add a cam.
I would recommend an Erson cam grind for the performance side. If you run stick, bigger is better. One thing that frustrated me was I held back some punches and was dissapointed I did. So if you can spend the money to do the engine right, or save the money and do some matenience. Make sure that the shop shaves .1 off, order a cam and get the card! Valves.... your choice I have mixed feelings, balancing is a must!
So to reiterate you can spend money here and there and get a mediocre result. Or save the money and do the engine "right", but go ahead and adjust valves and HEI the old girl. There is a reason why the new v8 thing is to get packages that work together, just like putting the cam in with the right gears and tranny. However, knowing what I know now I would make sure I had all my ducks in a row and not skimped on something to go back and redo it spending an extra %50 than to it from the beginning. My two cents.

I don't agree with this at all. 23 mpg with mild mods and a too big carb....

but on a pre-'67 car like yours with rod- rather than cable-operated throttle, it is a non-trivial swap...

But Dan... he's got a 1970.... lol....

In either case, I've installed (like many others) the throttle pedal into the older cars, and they work fine... just takes some trial and error until you find a way to make it work flawlessly.

A 2bbl is awesome, especially on a stock engine.... almost ANYTHING is better than the baby 1bbls that they slapped on there. Sure, you CAN get decent mileage with one... but it will still be slow.

Dutra Duals all the way.

It better be, my big block Dart Sport gets that much!
A Super Six with a good/proper tune up and larger exhaust your mileage AND power will increase.

That question has been answered at least three times in this thread, including immediately after the comments about the orange box. It's right...there...in front of...your...eyes.

A little to the left...

No, too far, a little back to the right...

There y'go! Right there!

(Thor: Oops...maybe I had ChargerSXT's '64 in mind, or maybe I just didn't pay enough attention to what I was copy-and-pasting from another thread! )

Hey Ted,

I run a holley 600 VS
Clifford intake with 2" spacer
head ported oversize valves and 40 off
30 over balanced and blue printed
stock cam with alittle more lift, 425

It spins at 2700 at around 65
it has a sweet spot at 70 where it is very smooth and holds speed very well.
I didn't build it for mialage but it seems that to a certian point the performance mods increased the mialage, I don't know if it will continue to rise the more i do or not but i shall find out  .

SO i picked up the complete super six setup. My next question is where can i send the carb to be rebuilt that does a good job and is not too expensive. The car ran good, however the carb looks like it was pulled from the titanic. All the linkage is rusted, etc. It is a carter .

That depends on what you mean by "too expensive". If the carb is crudded up such that just tossing in a gasket kit won't get the job done, then a full, professional carb refurbishment is needed; that's several hours of skilled work with special tools, plus parts and supplies, which is going to run a couple hundred dollars no matter how you slice it. There's nothing such as a carb rebuilder who does a good job and is cheap. If you aren't willing to spend for the necessary skilled and complete work, you can expect only halfway results.

If you are willing to pay what the work is worth, you may want to check with Buzzard Carbs, see here.

Another known-good carb rebuilder is Jeff Dreibus "The Old Carb Doctor", 1-800-945-CARB.

There have been other posts over the years here on the forum recommending particular carb rebuilders.

After reading (I don't agree with this at all. 23 mpg with mild mods and a too big carb....) I did get 20 mpg also but I could only get in the 17 second range at the track and the more mods i done the faster i went at a price to gas mileage. I run a street car in the 13 second range but the gas milage went down from 20 mpg to 13 mpg but I went from 17seconds in the 1/4 mile to 13 seconds now if somebody can tell me how to get a 13 second 1/4 mile slant 6 street car that is 2700 lbs to get 23 mpg on pumped gas you got my attention [/quote]

I apologize i was not very clear with my responce, If you increase the air flow from the head and intake you can make more power and increase the economy of the engine, To a Point, then it will go down hill... OK make an engine more efficient than it was stock it will increase Power and Economy...MHO

13 second slant is a race car.... IMHO

I am sorry for the side step off topic no more responce from me....

I disagree I believe it was completely relavent and important. The difference is Dan threw in some numbers to give a reference point. Mileage defintley didn't go down and I run a 17.0 also. I think I could continue to shave off a full second to two before I say any determental effect on my mileage. The problem is what is his budget, goal, all that. This question has been answered many many many many many times before, and ArmyOfChuck answered it at the very beginning.
Carb, Cam, Compression. The key to any engine, if you read Pop Hot rod that is the exact recipe to build up a 318 to 400hp (and some magnum heads). My only addition to what has been said is make sure you get the right cam for the job AND degree it in. Carb is all opinion and compression well you can shave off the head, get different pistons, or whatever depending on what fuel you want to run.
