What distributer are you running? How much centrifical advance is built into the distributer?

I"m thinking you want someware around 26-30 degrees total, and 10-12 degrees initial. That would mean you only want about 20 degrees max or about 10 degrees in the distributer.
Also you don't want the timing to change between about 800 rpm to about 1500 rpm.

If you didn't change the cam or timing chain, then there's no way the cam timing could be off barring major damage inside.

Rotor/cap phasing sounds like a very likely candidate to me. Try another dist.

I still think the CARB is the only thing you changed to make it run worse, right? If that's the only change before the trouble started, then 99.5% that is the problem. Borrow another carb from Charles?

Anyone have a spare carb they could bring to Wilkesboro?? Ron H?

Lou

I have another distributor, I will put it on the car tonight and try it.

Charles does not run carbs so he does not have one. The smallest Carb I have is a 750 cfm that flows over 900 cfm. When the car ran well it had a 650 on it which is what is back on the car.

The only other thing we changed was the balancer on the front of the motor. So we were thinking we got the timing off somehow, but we reset TDC. No matter what we have done to the timing, carb, or anything else the car just will not go back to where it was at. We are missing something or something has just flat out broke and we cannot find it.

I am willing to try my 500 CFM Holley 2bbl on there at Wilkesboro. I'll have to pull it off my truck then put it back on to race, but at least we could try that midday on Sat. I'll bring an extra 2bbl/4bbl adapter plate. That is a rock solid carb that will work on about any motor setup.

I also have some extra dists I'll bring along. Good luck.

Lou

Thanks Lou. I will post tonight on what we did and see what happens. My dad has a 650 on his car and he just had surgery and will not be able to race for a while so we may put his carb on my car if what we do tonight does not solve the problem.

Changed the carb, did not fix it. Changed the distributor, did not fix it. Talked to Mr. Charles Myers and after talking it over, we agree that it almost has to be a cam timing issue. I am going to start pulling the motor out tomorrow.

I suspected cam timing which is why I asked about cranking compression. I once made the mistake of using #1 exhaust to check the installed centerline when degreeing a cam. Thankfully I figured it out without wasting too much time.

How could he run 7.90s, and not change anything internally, then have it run poorly after swapping carbs?

I just don't see how it could be cam timing unless they opened the motor up or some serious damage happened inside.

Am I missing something here?

Lou

When I had kinda the same Issues I checked with MSD and they said to mount the oil filled blaster coil vertical, and to shroud the wires to the dist and ground the shrouded wire,,,,mine was a different issue, but thats what THEY told me to do,,just a thought,Guzzi Mark

The first time we took the car to the track after the rebuild it ran a 7.90 off the trailer. We made two passes only because the car was running lean and did not want to chance burning a piston. The carb was changed and everything has gone to hell in a hand basket since. We cannot come close to getting back to that time.

I am with you Lou. Everyone is scratching their head. However we believe we may have found the culprit just a little while ago. Unfortunately its too late for me to make Wilksboro now. So I am going to put the car back together and head to T-N-T next week and see for sure if the problem is fixed.
