I am very interested in hearing the autopsy results; my attempts to do ones on potted electronics have not been very successful.

I also dug into my regulator module for my caravan 1987 (yes same one as yours!) and resoldered the 3 pins just in case, resealed with clear RTV. No problems.

b4 our 1968 Dodge Dart quit charging I had issues like this. the hot batt wire was corroded @ the bulkwall and made some contact now and then/also the field wire @ the alt was only 1 strand and did brake..it killed the alt.
just a thought.
