Hi SSD, It might be a possibility on the riser, but not the exhaust. It's 2.5 inch, brand new and through a new turbo muffler. I had the manifold replaced a year ago (old one warped), but it was old and used, so it's possible that the riser isn't working. It isn't "stuck" in the closed position, though. It's usually in the open (counter clockwise) position. Let's not forget that I must have some kind of cooling issue. That could be reason for the pinging, potentially? Ted: Not sure of my jet. It's a reman-ed Carter BBS that's a couple of years old. Probably pretty crappy to start with, but that was pre-hanging out at Slantsix.org ![]() |

Quote: The Las Vegas to San Diego highway journey seems crazy with the downhill.
This is easy, I checked in with Google; Las Vegas elevation 2030 feet, San Diego close to sea level; you were traveling down hill.

Well, if you can't make your "reman" carb work well (which is a difficult thing to do; most of them don't) send me a PM; I've got a new carb on the shelf for you. |

I'm convinced Dan has a time machine, but instead of going to see some dinosaurs, or the Pyramids being built, be dashes off to the 60's to score a few more carburetors ![]() |

Hummm. Fresh from conspiracy theory station: Those glasses, I recall a photo of Dan with a pair of horn rimmed (of all types…) glasses makes me think that perhaps he dose have a WABAC Machine, and Dan is an allies for Sherman, of Sherman & Peabody fame. Not only that, perhaps this guy is his MythBuster cousin, the beard, glasses, and relentless crusade to ferret out the truth, not unlike Dan’s quest to set all straight that slant. Could it be? I’m still waiting for rain to clear out of here so I can head out to a car show, mind is wandering, too much coffee, and I don’t want to start a project this morning. |

Oh, don't think I haven't fantasized along exactly those lines. Regrettably, I have headlamp shelves and carburetor shelves and nonexistent-starter-drive shelves… …but no flux capacitor shelf. ![]() |

pinging and hot combustion chamber... Isn't that a sign of timing advanced too far? |

Hi 63valconvert, have you checked that the TDC mark on the balancer actually is TDC? Running too much advance usually has the same effect as leaning out. Olaf. |

Too small of a jet (lean condition), vacuum leaks (lean condition) and too much timing will make the SL6 run hot. Make sure the carb to manifold bolts are tight and the gasket is good. |

Just as an update, I did a reverse flush on the cooling system, replaced the coolant with water and water wetter and it's running beautifully. Seems like I may have this problem licked, but another 300 miles to Vegas will be the true test. I bought a used HEI setup from one of the board members, so that'll be installed before my next journey. Wow. Working on these cars can be addictive. Dangerously so. |

Don’t get caught below freezing with no antifreeze, or you will be looking for a new block. |

Gotcha on that one. No worries there. Car will be as far north as Las Vegas only through this month, after that it's San Diego only. Figured I'd try it for a bit. It'll be back to coolant mix once I move back north next year. ![]() |

No, because you are still resorting to band-aids (running improper liquid in your cooling system -- no corrosion protection; your engine and radiator and heater core will quickly become a corroded, clogged-up mess). If you can't get it to run at normal temperatures without this kind of band-aid, you haven't yet found or fixed the problem.

Last year between Yuma and San Diego it dropped into the 20's? It was really nasty that night. |

I think you've got it. I've blown the coolant out of several engines over the years. Pinging under light throttle is what I've experienced just before the engine would shut down.![]() As part of your cooling system clean out, suggest doing what you can to clean out the block. In my experience with my 73, pulling the thermostat and flushing the block didn't get all the junk out. I replaced the lower freeze plugs on the driver's side of the car. Before putting the new ones in, I used a magnetic "wand" and pulled about a pound or so scale. I'm convinced there's more junk in there, but I haven't had any cooling issues in 110º + temps this past summer. A somewhat offbeat factor might be the routing of the fuel line. The stock routing takes fuel in close proximity to the water pump and the cylinder head. Heating the fuel too much promotes vapor lock, followed eventually by ignition of the fuel. Usually, vapor lock results in no starting, but when running it can come across as hesitation and pinging. Whether it would cause the plugs to turn white, IDK. |
