Not with front-on/rear-off opposite-phase turn signals, you can't. If you're setting up sequential turn signals, each segment and the whole collection and any non-sequential signal (such as at the other end of the car) must flash at 60 ± 30 flashes per minute and meet the minimum and maximum on/off time ratio requirements of SAE J945, which I can spell out for you if you like the next time I'm back in my office (after 7 March).

Your speeding analogy isn't a good one. Vehicle lights are regulated as strictly as they are because they have to communicate their message immediately and unambiguously.

But Dan, that's not what the Fords & Mercurys did. Honest. The fact is, real world, ask the cop who's looking at your car if that alternating signal is considered dangerous. He'll go 'huh'?' You can't tell, except from a side view on some cars and even in that case two alternating flashing lights are going to draw more attention than simultaneous ones. Or not.

Oh, my speeding analogy is in reference to 'law breaking' not the severity of the offense though I'd guess more folks have been killed from speeding than a bad blinker.

use good pre lube, cam lube on cam and lifters....just before fire up...remove sparkplugs,turn over till oil presure builds.....indtal plugs ,fire up .run in cam...change oil and filter

Yeah, actually, they did (and do). The '69 Imperials, too. And the present Mustangs.
That just means you'll probably not get a ticket. It doesn't mean it's safe (or legal).
Speeding means going faster than the number on the sign. It's not necessarily unsafe (in fact, it can be considerably safer than observing the limit, in terms of likelihood of being in a crash). It's illegal because it's illegal.

Driving too fast for conditions, on the other hand, has nothing to do with numbers on a sign. It's illegal because it's unsafe.

Altering a car's exterior lights so they don't work in the standardized, regulated manner is much more like driving too fast for conditions than it is like speeding. That's why the regs are based on mountains of objective, scientific research on how best to convey a message with light...not based on a subjective opinion from me or you or Joe Snow from Idaho on whether any particular signal configuration looks adequate or great or pretty good.

I don't need a title, but yes, this is my area of professional expertise.
