Geez, he is a GM engineer speaking about GM engines. Not a single mention of a slant 6. GM has used manifold vacuum for the vacuum advance for as long as I can remember, until they went electronic.

What is funny is when somebody posts this on a Chrysler board as a justification for them hooking that brand new Holley up wrong and wonders why their car runs like crap and pings. They then post this article up as justification and then all hell breaks loose...

I don't recall those '70s-era GM cars running very well.
They failed smog checks pretty good- lots of advance at idle= lots of HC emissions.

Remember how they used to equip station wagons, vans, and trucks with those metal-mesh spark arrestors at the tailpipe? That was because their dumb pellet-type catalytic converters would heat up, the pellet bed mesh walls would deform, and individual red-hot ceramic beads would go flying out the catalytic converter. If one made it past the muffler, it could easily start a fire. Tough to imagine the beads making it through the muffler, but sometimes they did—the spark arrestor holes would get plugged up with beads, one by one, and eventually the vehicle would go "HISSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!" slowly down the road due to the clogged-off tailpipe.

For that reason, we should do whatever some GM engineer says with respect to ignition advance configuration.
