Use a factory air cleaner with a thermostatic snorkel. An air cleaner with an open/exposed element is not better, it's worse.
+1. And rig up a true cold air intake while you are at it. No point in sucking in hot underhood air when it is so easy to rig up a cold air intake.

It's just temporary air cleaner for now to keep dirt out of the carb while I'm tuning and tinkering with it, I have a 10" that needs the bottom shaved down for my hood clearance.
Hmm...Cold air intake is a good ideal as well. Thanks for all the feedback.

Yes, a cold air take is really worth it in terms of mileage and performance. Take a look at mine.....cost is about $15 in a few common parts.

You can also view my simple aluminum heat shield which really works in two important ways. Keeping the carb cool and the number 1 runner warmer.

Hi Super6er.
There are some differences in the manifold to carb insulator gasket, between different BBD versions, be sure you have the correct one.

You will see them if you take a look in this manual, from page 26 -> on:

Carter BBD operation and repair manual(pdf)

Olaf.
