Xproject187,

From what you have been describing is a rich condition which can be caused by the choke not opening up fully, the float too high and a worn needle and seat allowing fuel to over flow.

When I had a 1945 on my engine it suffered all these problems at one time or another. Just take your time and correct each problem one at a time. Sounds like the carb hasn't had any maintenance for a long, long time. I had three 1945's on my 74. I picked up a few spares and kept rebuilding them so I would have a spare ready. I finally gave up on the 1945's since mileage was my goal and went with the 1920 Holley Economaster and picked up 6 miles per gallon.

Go to the Engine FAQ section and down load the manual for the 1945 and watch the video.

I'm curious as to what is "high mileage" on a slant 6? I mean what number would you consider it at?

I am at 453,000 miles on the 74 Swinger and a 276,000 miles on my barn find stock 1979 SL6 engine. My 9.5 to 1 motor is out and in the garage getting up grades.

I would think some where over 200,000 miles might be "high mileage".

I'm a smudge over 75,000 and seeing problems, I guess the little old lady car is a nightmare in disguise.

Yeah, I downloaded the 1945 Pdf & the Chrysler training video (MTSC 74-9.mp4) & I'm still in the process of trying to comprehend all of it. Thank you for pointing at what would cause the issues we're seeing ie.(the floats too high & a worn needle/seat allowing fuel overflow) I'm pretty sure a few of thee other posters did too but once again I was not catching on.

PS:
Went to Pick & Pull thee other day, scouting out a replacement Choke Thermostat(ours got damaged) & Pull-Off. Anyhow there was only one Slant-6 in the entire Junk-Yard. It was a 1980'ish Dodge Aspen with a /6 225 & it had a 'Brand New' Holley 1 barrel on it. So I got it. The thing is, although it came off a /6 & it looks relatively the same, I'm not 100% sure I can use it on my Son's 74 since it has a solenoid thing on the side of it . I'd appreciate it if someone would tell me if it can be used on my Son's 74 Slant 6. Here's what's written on the side of it. http://sdrv.ms/1lBZPFS

Don't worry about the solenoid. I took the one off on my 74, It is not a must unless you have air conditioning then it is a nice feature. Sometimes the simpler the better.......

Well I'm glad to hear you say that Ted, because I left the solenoid thing behind. But I Googled its numbers & found this post http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/sho ... p?t=254234 .
Where thee OP (CudaChick1968) says it's a 'Holley 225 Monojet'. But I thought Rochester made the 225 Monojet, well whatever it is, will we be able to use it on my Sons '225 Swinger' ? Because I've opened the carburetor up & it looks pristine. Thanks for your time Brother.
PS: I really like the way you did your engine Dude, how much HP you crankin outa it ?

Thanks!

When I built it, I followed Doc's (Doug Dutra) build plan for a "torque build" which is listed in the Engine FAQ. Doc said I am limited to 160 HP because of the one barrel. It was a real torque monster which felt more like a 318 but it had better mileage! Lots of fun to drive! It would make a great truck motor!

That motor is out at the moment, getting some upgrades to run a 4 barrel and more cam.......the Oregon 791 thanks to DI.

I have been running a stock 79 block in the interim which provides a surprising amount of power with the ignition mods, distributor recurve, 2.5" exhaust, cold ram air, air oil separator, heat deflector, fuel line mod, electric fans, air dam, etc.....all the stuff from the "torque build" engine. It has over 265,000 on it and runs very well, excepts it shakes at certain rpms (idle to 1800) like a piece of piston skirt is missing and throwing off the balance. Or maybe it is that stock steel shim manifold gasket sucking air.....Other than that it pulls hard runs silky smooth from 50 mph (2000 rpm) on up and gets very good mileage. All the plugs (NGK UR4 GP) show a beautiful light tan color. :D :D :D

Post subject:  225 Mono-Jet ?

160 huh, cool.
Did you get a look at the carburetor I pulled out of that "1980'ish" Aspen? http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/sho ... p?t=254234
Is it really called a "225 Mono-Jet" & am I correct in thinking I can use it on my Son's 74/6? I ask because I'd rather work on a secondary Carb, so if it all goes south, I just reinstall thee original(H-1 1945) & be rite back where we started.

No mopar guys typically would call it a "one barrel" or a Holley 1945...(or in some cases where it didn't work out a piece of $%&*!)...That's what you get when a chevy guy decides to be a born again mopar guy...the person probably calls their sure grip unit a "posi"...
