Post subject: | Getting Ready To Install... |
Well, I'm going to take advantage of the 70 degree weather this weekend and do my charging system upgrade. I've got all the parts together including a N.O.S. 90amp Mopar/Nippondenso alternator still in the original box I scored from a Chrysler dealer on E-Bay liquidating some old inventory. One problem I see coming though is not having enough room on the starter solenoid post to connect all the wires that come together there. I've found some "thinner" ring connectors for the 6ga wire that helps but theres not alot of room on that post to add stuff with the thick battery cable connectors on there already. Any ideas on how I might make more room for the extra wires? |

Couple options: One is look through summit or jegs, or I can look up a p/n for you and you can check local part stores for it but a couple companies sell junction bolts. Its a stud molded into a plastic housing, you mount it somewhere and make all the connections there... 2: Make your extra charging wire connections go straight from the back of the alt to the pos terminal of the battery itself, not the relay. The battery acts as a natural voltage stabilizer so its good to have the charge source go directly to it. The rest of the car is still attached to the battery and will pull its voltage from there... 3: Do both, that will give you a good clean junction bolt to tie everything together without piling things up on the relay stud, and you'll have a good charge on the battery at all times and simplify the install a little bit. It will also give you a good spot to pull batt power from under the hood when you add headlamp relays or other accessories ![]() |

Post subject: | Update: Charging System Upgrade Done! |
Yesterday after some last minute Christmas shopping, I was able to finish the installation of the 90amp alternator. MAN WHAT A DIFFERENCE, I wish I had done this upgrade a long time ago! The lights stay nice and bright all the time even at idle. It even sounds better/smoother sitting there idling in the driveway. It feels a little more responsive at part throttle and no more momentary dimming of the lights when I apply the brakes. ![]() A few minor finishing touches/tweakes that I still have to finish. I was able to get everything connected to the starter solenoid but there is NO more room on that post for anything. I'm going to get a relay junction as Oldskool suggested, so I can utilize later for adding electric fans wich I plan to do this coming summer. I need to get a little shorter fan belt. After putting the Nipondenso alt on I'm ALL the way out on the adjustment bracket. The belt is less than a year old and tension feels good there but no more room to adjust. All in all I feel this is probably one of the best upgrades you can do to get an older vehicle to function and perform like a newer vehicle. Putting this together with the increase in compression I did first, along with the stronger spark ignition/distributer recurve and aluminum intake this truck performs night and day from when I bought it a year and a half ago. I owe it all to this site and the good people and advice I have received here. Thanks guys!! |
