Conversation at DadTruck's turned to the 500 (John is a rabid fan) and somehow the Bettenhausen name popped up. One of the Illinoisy guys said the family was based out of his home state but also had Indy connections -which I agreed. Tony, the family patriarch, died in 61 in practice at the speedway. Gary, one of three racing sons, died Sunday. He lived 'bout 20 minutes from my house. He started 21 Indy races between 68 and 93 - finished third in 1980. |

This year will be our last chance to finally make it to the 500 before heading back overseas for a few years. Wish we had jumped on the chance when we had it. Maybe someday.

my extras are spoken for,,but for tickets,,, unless you want to sit some place specific, you can buy tickets race day AM from scalpers around the track, for face value or a very small premium if you want several seats together. as it gets closer to the start, prices go down,, But I like getting there early, walking around and seeing the place fill up.. I have a friend that waits outside the track until the engines are starting and then hits up a scalper and buys a single premium ticket for pennys on the dollar,, |
