Quote: help raise the $30-40k of startup cost, then I will be happy to pursue this project
I appreciate that folks have stepped forward to move this aluminum head project along,, however I believe that I will plan to remain on the sidelines for now and not place an order. On projects like this there are always unforeseen design and process issues, so I will wait until the part design and the production process is proven. no doubt that the aluminum head has many of the features coveted by slant six fans: * 4 valve technology * alloy construction * cross flow design * a pony * two spark plugs per cylinder however it is also known that the second generation alloy head will also have the kicked out valve cover rail that allows the cylinder deactivation module to be a drop in. For me that is a deal maker. so enjoy yours, I will wait for the 'improved' version. |

I would also like provisions to add a knock sensor for modern engine management systems, a fitting for a modern coolant temp sensor, and a better sealing lip by the pushrod holes. Alternatively, a new head could be desigen to run an overhead cam by switching the engine to a timing belt system. Inspiration can be found HERE and here. Whatever happened to the Argentinian head? Or you go on another ride here at the slant six cylinder head fun park. |

Gen-3 will have provisions for GDI, so that's what I'm waiting for. |

Quote: Howard Davis already did it on his own.
An persistent amateur could probably do the work, after a half dozen years of failing and learning and being laughed at. Most cities once had low paid foundry workers and pattern makers but there aren't many of them around anymore, few who would want to do this dirty work as a hobby!

I believe the Howard David head was CNC processed from billet,,that would eliminate the costs associated to foundry tooling and proving out the casting process. |

If it was Machined From Billet are there any water Jackets? How do you get those from a Billet piece? My guess is that It was somehow cast Either sand or otherwise, then Possibly CNC Machined from there. Greg |

People make complete billet heads. I believe the Davis' was full billet. Theirs may not have water at all. To get water jackets, you have to drill/mill out passages from the outside and then plug the outside holes. Lou |

Quote: water Jackets
on a billet head you do 'access plates',, machine out the inside then cover the opening,, with that technique the water jacket would not have anyway near the capacity of a sand cast part,,but that allows cooling at the hot spots,, valves seats, exhaust port walls,, |

What about a two piece head? A bottom portion for the spark plugs and combustion chambers and an upper portion for the water jacket? |

Howard's car is on meth, it may not have any water in it anyway. |
