Got the electronic ignition wired up today but distributor didn't show up. Wouldn't start with Lean Burn distributor, hoping the 79 distributor is the missing link. I have good spark going from the coil to the distributor.

The slant six could be ordered with a two barrel carb in the US from 77-81. By 86 slant sixes were single barrel carb only. Someone has swapped the two barrel carb and intake manifold onto your engine.

The concerning part of that then is the guy told me he drove it to where I bought it. That would insinuate that it was running with the lean burn and non lean burn carb.

Have you tried starting it with the choke linkage adapter?

I went and got the part number from the intake since someone mentioned it wouldn't have been a factory 2bbl truck. The part number is 4273131. FABO suggests its a Super Six intake and prone to cracks. Any thoughts on this?

Is it an aluminium intake? These were two piece intakes that were electronic beam welded at the factory. The ugly and bubbly welds have been reported to be porous from the factory, but a good thick coat of paint can cure that. The problem i have seen lately with the aluminium intakes are cracks in the floor of the intake immediately below the carb and next to the port for the EGR gasses. I don;t know if it is due to thermal cycling or the very high heat that that part of the intake is exposed to combined with the (comparatively) cold air rushing down the throat of the carb, but the last three or four factory aluminium one and two barrel intakes I have had my hands on all were cracked in the same area.

Yours might be fine, but i would find a way to pressure test it to be sure, or a good ceramic coating.

Thanks for everyones input. Tonight I was able to troubleshoot a little further and got it tomstart and run and drive it through the parking lot at work. Still need to set the timing and adjust the carburetor, do some desperately needed maintenance but I had to get it to run to see where I stood.

That is definitely one of the potentially porous aluminum intakes. Check the floor for cracks. Hooray for getting it running!
