So, basically the rear of the engine needs support, check, and you don't have to loosen the motor mounts or lift the engine, right?

Motor mounts only need to be loosened if you need more access or matching the angle of the tranny on install and have to tilt the assembly a bit to do it... Oddly if the spool motor mounts are tight you almost can get away with no support in the back... almost... I have cheated a couple times and stuffed a 2x4 or so behind the head and let the engine rest against the fire wall (mind the wiring harness)... when you put the tranny back in place, you will want to use a jack on the oil pan on the engine anyway to help match the mating angle as you work the tranny back into place... at that point you may need to loosen the mounts a little if more angle is needed to get it to fit....(at least it's not a manual transmission and you have to deal with the input shaft and splines....LOL)... It is also easier to install the tranny without the crossmember in place and installing it after you have bolted the belhousing to the block...(this can be a bit of a PITA with the spool crossmember mount and a new/tight bushing in place....)

The last auto trans I had out was behind a 360. I used two jack stands side by side with a 2x4 across them to rest the oil pan on. That worked well and was stable.
