So how do you move the stalk when your left hand is steering the steering wheel (and not close to the stalk) and your right hand is on the gear shifter?
The Cascade Sports Car Club driving instructor in me says "If your hand is on the shifter when you're not shifting, your hand is in the wrong place. It takes a fraction of a second to shift. Shift, then move your hand back to the steering wheel."
My eldest son said much the same to me a few years back.
I thought I was the one that should have a go at him about his driving, not the other way around

Young people are far easier to teach at the race track.

My eldest son doesn't exist (parenthood is hereditary; if your folks didn't have any kids, you probably won't either) but if he did, I would probably tell him on life's big do-and-don't list, obstructing headlamps is a "not do". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
