True, true. He said most of his customers buy cheap heads from summit. Then the spend another chunk putting better parts in them. And of course porting and flowing. I have been charting numbers that I have stumbled on. It will be interesting to see if the trend on my head matches what I have found. Funny thing, this head porter lives 5 minutes from my house. And he has a big shop in the back yard, does all his work there. |

I found my head flow info and (tried to) PM it to Rick a few hours ago. I would like to know what a stock "447" peanut head is good for. My results were done on John's flow bench at 10", and was either cyl 3 or 4. I have a thread here buried a few pages back in the "engine" section here, about my build//, skip the "war and peace" and go to the next to last post in the thread and my results are there. That's with the SI oversize valves after I made all the iron dust. I had that head shaved 70-thou and got the chambers to 49-50cc's. My first attempt at porting a head that I hope " counted" as prior to that is played with a couple of heads deemed scrap, due to having cracks in them. Those weren't /6 heads though. And I never had either of those flowed either. I know I was in pins and needles as the " band sawed head" seemed to be resurrected and posted right around the time I did the head whose results were shown in that engine rebuild thread. |

Thanks for highlighting that to bring it back up, wish I knew how. I've recently had a few people asking me for that flow info. I also wish I knew where that head started at, when it was as cast from the factory

No problem. I found a set of numbers from DT also searching for flow numbers. I used a formula to convert your 10 to 28 inH2O also and put that in my matrix. Just seeing what trends are across all the data is interesting. I have that old head that had a compression problem still here. I might put the 1.88 or 1.81 (don't remember) intake and 1.5 exhaust valves back in number 3 or 4. I will take it to the porter when I pick up my other head and see what it flows. If he doesn't charge me too much.... He told me the other day, I don't need any more work. He was doing me a favor in his spare time. |

Ixnay on the second head to the porter. He called me a minute ago about the bottom row of intake exhaust studs. Said he was 40 minutes in and still had not flowed any air. He said if it was a SB chevy he could have done 2 sets of heads by now. I am thinking this is the first and last of flow work by him. |

Ixnay on head number 1. He does not have a bore adapter small enough for my small chambers. He has 4.0 and up and it over laps with head bolts and adjacent chamber. Crap, I was looking forward to the data. No good deed goes un-punished. Whatever that means. |

This is easy. Just drive up to John's with your heads, and I'll meet you down there with your 198 crank. |

Hey it was easy for me too. You are a nut case! John has everything in storage now anyway. And while I don't have a head that needs flowed/ evaluated right now (my own excluded, nevermind) I hope to run into him at the Indy swap coming up .. |

So which era of cylinder heads are these numbers coming from? There is a least 4 different castings done over the years and I have a head from each era. 1) I have a 1963 head with the first generation of the chamber design. The ports neatly match the gasket and the runners have a nice flow to the valves. This may be a fluke, or the myth that yellow engines are better then red engines is true. 2) I have a version from 1974, but it is currently setting on top of the engine of our Duster. So I can't say how well it was casted. 3) I have a couple of heads from the 1976 - 1979 era. The runners need to be gasket matched and there is a definite difference in the port runners from the '63 head. 4) I have a head from 1980 and beyond. Once again they need to be gasket matched and the runners are designed differently from the others. There must be a reason for the port runner changes. Is one era better then another? |

I think my head is the "169" head and that is what Mike asked me to send for porting if I had one. |
