I double checked that my kick down cable was pulling the lever completely back and warmed up my engine. Slid some glass packs on the headers and installed my license on the back. Out the road I went and I think the transmission is fine. With all the traction of the rough road it didn't spin and seemed to shift fine. The shifts were a little soft but not slipping. So that is good. I will now drop the pan and have Bigslantfan install my shift kit and turn up the pressure a bit. We should be ready to go!

Very cool! 8) I'm glad it doesn't appear to be as bad as you first thought!

Awesome! I do have a recently rebuilt 904 with a shift kit sitting in a corner that used to be in my car rick if anything does happen to yours.

Put together, Take apart....repeat, again and again!! that is what it seems like sometimes.

But today I dropped the pan and valve body and will be taking it over to Bigslant6fan for him to install the shift kit and raise the line pressure a bit. Will double check my band adjustments while I'm in there.

I also have that new spool the boys got me for Christmas that needs installed. So. I pulled the axles and dropped the single track 3.91 rear out and took it apart. I pushed the pin out in order to get the center spacer out that the rear needed for axle adjustments with the tapered bearings. Since this spacer has a nice size hole through it, I plan to get a nice stiff spring and put through it and slide it inside the spool. There is a undercut in the center of the spool, so when the spring gets to there it should stay in the spool when i remove the axles. Just for reference that spacer is exactly 1.500" long. That may come in handy for someone later.

You can see the space between the splines. That is where the spring should end up

What is the spring going to do, don't the 8-3/4's have bolt-in axles. Its always been the mod to do to 12 bolt Chevy rears that use C-clips to hold their axles in to weld the 8-3/4 housing ends onto the Chevy housing and respline the axles. Just not sure what the springs purpose is going to be with a spool.

This spacer is what the axles butt up against in the center if you have the tapered roller bearing (adjustable end play) axles.
All the spring is for, is some way to keep the spacer from pulling out with an axle and falling into the rear end or axle tube if / when axles are removed. While it is together it does nothing but ride along. If you change to the "green" ball bearings, the spacer is not needed.

Post subject:  Nuetral safety switch hook up

I have the 68 up 3 pin neutral safety switch. I am coming from a 4 speed car that has just 2 wires going down to the back up light switch.

1) Get a new starter relay with the ground tab

2) Run the center wire from the Neutral switch to the ground lug on the new relay
3) Run the 2 original back-up light wires down to the 2 outside post on the Neutral switch. Does it matter which one goes where?

Anything else I need to do?

Thanks, Rick

Post subject:  Just call me dummy!

Well, Just put a bullseye on my back and call me stupid, or dummy, or choose your own word! I have my rear end apart and was ready to install the spool. Luckily for me I did look at the ring gear and noticed that I did not have the 3.91 rear in the car. It was the "other" rear that I had setting in the basement beside it. It is a 3.23!! I do dumb things with such ease that I must be a professional. So now I can reassembel the 3.23 and pull the 3.91 apart and have the bearings swapped over.

I guess that explains why I was not wound up in 3rd gear through the traps! And it also means it should be substantially faster with the 3.91 and spool! I guess that is good news!

Well, I haven't posted about my car for a while because I hurt my back and have been in bed pretty much for the last week and a half. I improved enough to walk to the garage and look at my car , but I can't bend over or lift yet.

Bigslant6fan has my Valve body/shift kit and pressure change all done and hopefully I can get over to pick it up this week. (Thanks Charles!!) I was looking at my new starter relay with the Neutral safety lug and hope to get that hooked up soon as well.

Question- On my car which was a manual transmission originally. Are the 2 black wires that run down to the back -up light switch just a ground loop? In other words no +12V to either one of those wires? I checked them for voltage and had none, so I was just wondering.

Also have the 3.91 rear apart and plan to drop it off and have the bearings pressed off and on next week. Ordered new 3" axle studs and open end lugs so i will be ready for slicks. Since the axles are out I figured now was the easiest time to do them.

Was hoping to go the Mason Dixon next Saturday, but with 3 physical therapy appointments this week, that is probably a long shot.
